I like it.
Too many poor design choices. It sucks.
They tried something new, but it didn't really work.
Nothing wrong with that, I wish more developers would try that these days.

I like cryptic old games that are unforgiving. We get very few things like that today. Everything now is more concerned with holding your hand because devs now are so terrified of scaring casuals away since everyone now has ADHD or something.
That said, the original Castlevania games were already unforgiving, so a change of style maybe wasn't needed. But they took a chance like Zelda, and while I don't love this game as much as I love Zelda II, it was interesting.
It's the worst of the three NES Castlevania games, but it's also the only one I haven't finished.

I like Bisqwit's hack for it, which is almost black magic.
The problem is Castlevania 2 is a fundamentally flawed game, though.
