yes you can, just not with all weapons. lothric spear running attack or charge, gundyrs meme charge, any katana running stab, etc. of course, it gets difficult if the host has phantoms, which is why you should always focus the phantoms down first. they usually have shit HP so you can take them out with a simple r1-r1 and roll punish r1 combo with most weapons. or just hit them with a great machete or something and they'll die in a single r1-r1 combo 90% of the time

People give it shit for groups of enemies, which DS1 did just as bad and DS3 does worse. Not only that they seem to have put combos on almost every enemy so they can effortlessly break your shield guard.
I dont remember ever complaining about ganks in DS2, it seemed to be 1v1 most of the time and rarely 2v1 which is fine and actually quite fun. Getting instantly stunlocked by 3 isnt.

Seriously. I have no PvP experience in Dark Souls, so I invade low level areas. I don't even have a PvP build or know how to make one, other than noticing short sweaping swords killing me from distance constantly. Everytime, I'm met with escort of 2-3 phantoms, 50/50 change of getting immediately smurfed, and very rarely another invader.
Strangest thing in this mess is, they're actually progressing through the level to a boss, because everything about this reads like ganksquads. If they're having trouble with the boss, why aren't they coming from the closest bonfire to the boss, or summon at the boss door?

I have a lot more fun invading as a purple phantom now. The win condition is less strict as you dont HAVE to kill the host and instead you can kill his buttbuddy phantom. More often than not you get summoned in an already ensuing clusterfuck of phantoms fighting each other and you can just go crazy.
It gets better when different sides start trusting you to help them out and you just stab them in the back.

DS2 was a mixed bag for me at least in terms of pvp. Hex magic dominated for quite awhile, being able to oneshot people even through dark resistant shield and classic From network made getting hit by spells even when dodging with high ADP common. Also soul memory slowly pushed people into the bracket where everyone just wore Havel's flipping around oneshotting people. Build variety was greater though and powerstancing is a mechanic im sad they did not carry over as it made some weapons like whips actually viable. It was pretty shitty though that you were forced into arena just to get orbs to invade.

Keep a 'buckler' type shield ready. this isn't DS1 parrying where you had to guess when they were going to attack and pre-parry that shit, it's piss easy in DS3. They R1 spam, you parry the third attack typically.

I'm getting the game in a few weeks. How does summoning and invasions work compared to the past few games? Like in DS1, you had to be alive to summon. Is there an "alive" system, or is it like 2 where you just lose some health when you die?I barely even remember DeS's system. I was alive for half the game, but only got invaded once.

Lots of people are just legitimately bad enough to need 2 phantoms to beat bosses or like playing with their friends using the password system
The single biggest tip for invasions is to remember that you are the enemy's reinforcements, don't immediately rush down the host, wait for them to be in a gaggle fuck of enemies or be separated from their phantoms before attacking, and try and get the phantoms first if possible
Use the environment to your advantage as well, try and kick people off ledges, wait by powerful enemies so the host will have to deal with more at once, hit them with poison etc.

There is a state called "embered" which is basically human form from DS1. You become embered from what you would become human for (winning invasions etc) but there are a few changed.
There is an item called ember with the equivilent of humanity except you become embered as soon as you pop it, you don't need to go to a bonfire and do shit.
Secondly you don't need to be embered to perform an invasion or be summoned as a phantom (you do still need to be embered to summon phantoms yourself though).

You have to bait them and try and get one ahead of the others. Gank squads make this easy because if you backpedal they love to spam running attacks which are pretty easy to parry most of the time, especially if it's a katana, rapier, or straight sword
farmed 30 wolfgrasses today and noticed that sl30 people are there really early without any backup. most of the time got friendly forest hunter to gang opponents so it was really easy to get covenant tier 2 rewards.

If you need embers really badly you can just throw your white soapstone down and get summoned for a boss, like I said you don't need to be embered to get summoned so you can do it whenever you feel.
