Wasn't really "different" it was just more advanced for it's time. Far, far superior to it's competitors (Microsoft Flight Simulator for example) but also had high system requirements.

Because Looking Glass were high-tier professionals. Half of their team were MIT graduates or equivalent and the other half were experts from other fields who were interested in game making, like the Brosius couple. They were largely overly qualified people who liked video games and wanted to push the medium forward.

Might be too modern for this thread but Neverland Company Inc.
Rune Factory isn't on the level of stuff like Thief but it was such an amazing series imo, and unlike a lot of other game series it just got better with each game. Now it's unclear if the series will ever continue.

There were some geniuses but also a lot of highly inexperienced people at LG. But, they were given creative freedom in a company that was willing to try new things even if it might put them out of business, and that's really how they got good results. Honestly if it was a new IP it wouldn't have been so poorly received, but the fact that it falls so short of Thief I and II and is just so derivative and barely took any notes from the original games is why it gets so much hate.
The game is mechanically sound and is "good" by modern standards but it just feels like another soulless derivative modern game with a couple mechanics taken from Thief, not an actual Thief game.
