I want to replay Silent Hill 2.
What is the best currently available version for that? Any unofficial patches or recommended mods?
Additionally, I would love to hear some opinions on wether Silent Hill 3 could be considered a better game than Silent Hill 2.

SH3 is about the cult so it's automatically inferior to SH2.
Silent HIll 3 prohibits the natural and formulates the surreal in new and fantastic ways; ways that Silent Hill 2 did not. It's much more stolid and creepy.

For me it is because the game is much more scary, had more strong moments and overall better art-design in my opinion. Gotta admit, not so much if it's the plot you're interested in, but overall I love SH3 more than 2

I played Silent Hill 2 HD and Silent Hill 3 HD to completion from the HD Collection. And I enjoyed it. I used the old voice acting for Silent Hill 2 since the new cast made it sound like a Naruto episode, on the flip side Silent Hill 3's redub sounded fine. I rewatched the original Silent Hill 3 cast and it was pretty stale.
Silent Hill's 2 voice acting was deliberately weird/awkward as fuck. It aged fine, Silent Hill 3's wasn't that great to begin with. Especially the detective.
For the uninitiated about the Silent Hill fanbase, one year ago the guy who does the wiki for Silent Hill community went insane and self-inserted uncut vs cut penis analysis in the plot of every Silent Hill game. There was backlash within the community and the self-processed biggest Silent Hill admin bragged about his 5,000+ worth edits.
That's just a small taste of this fanbase. If you have PS3 or 360, just get the HD collection. Unless you have signs of autism, the changes won't bother you.
And of course the ports were initially a clusterfuck and an embarrassment, but are they unplayable? No, they're competent ports with the patches. Should they be netter? Absolutely, but they are playable.

I think the voice acting of both SH2 and SH2HD is good and I don't mind listening to either of them.
However, visually, the HD edition produced some major fuck ups, there's no denying that.

You know you're almost sounding off like you're rating Silent Hill 2 or 3 as the Mona Lisa of video games. You played the original as they were, no one is taking that away from you.
I enjoyed the re-releases because the originals never interested me back in the day. Now I'm on board the Silent Hill bandwagon; too bad the series is dead now. If it makes you feel any better, I get why Homecoming and the PSP Silent Hill games weren't good.

There are bunch of anons who love Origins.
The only issue it has for me is that it doesn't need to be a prequel to the first game.
Trevis is actually pretty deep as characters and all the creatures he encounters as well as the locations reflect the events he's been through in life very well.
People just don't like to give it much thought because it wasn't made by japanese devs.

The otherworld mechanics comes from his trauma as well - his mother tried to kill him because she believed there is another world behind mirrors and people there told her that he's a child of the devil and needs to die.

Eh. I honestly don't remember all that much about it since I played it once when it first came out, but I just never connected with the character. And I thought his parent issues were pretty small time. That the blatant retconning of the first game. And while the mirrror mechanic might have a personal connection to the character, it makes the otherworld seem much less dangerous and scary.
I mean, if you like it, cool. But I just didn't. Unfortunately I am a Silent Hill elitist. The only games I've played that weren't the original 4 were origins and Shattered Memories. Gave them a chance but didn't like either.

The fog isn't all that hugely different in the PC version, or at least my plebeian ass can't tell much difference.
If you've got a good rig you could always emulate the PS2 if you wanted good res though.
