The Turks were a combination of the people that were pushed out of Anatolia when Alexander invaded and the people from client states of the Persian empire, mixed with some steppe people from Asia.
They became largely muslim after the rise of Islam and slowly began invading the ERE in 1071, culminating with them finishing the last of the ERE off in 1453 at Constantinople

Complicated.

The Turks were from central asia, roughly the same sort of region as the Mongols. But Turks from Turkey, modern Turks, aren't very Turkic at all. Their heritage is thoroughly watered down as the Turks conquered and raped pretty much everything straight from China to Austria, leading to them being very mixed.

No matter where we go, it's amazing. We go to Segesta. We go to Capua. We go all over. We went to, the other night, Ariminum, packed. Every place, Patavium, packed. Every place we go to, it's like this. It's amazing. And just great, great plebs.

I'll tell you what, they're going to vote for Consul Trump. That's why they're comin in, because they're so fed up with the system, this corrupt, horrible system. They're fed up with it and they're fed up with these barbarians back there, the papyrus writers. They are the WORST.

I love you. I do. I love you. I love every...you know what? The rooms, no matter where, whether it's big amphithetares or local steam rooms, it's amazing, and there's love in the room. And I told you the other night, a really good friend of mine who I would love to have negotiating for us against Parthia, Claudius Icahnicus, that's what we need, not these optimate hacks that we have.

I remember when the barbarians were moving into Gaul from the east, I told our senate, you gotta go in there and knock em out. Take the gold and knock em out, otherwise Germany or the Iberians will get it. I love Iberia, I love Germany, but their leaders are too smart for us. We have no border. We will build a wall, a wall along the rhine. And Germany will pay for the wall.

And oh boy, the legions, I love the legions. All my wounded centurions and cohorts of legionaries. I love em. Pompey has been neglecting them, and from now on we're not gonna let them be mistreated. I'm going to re-build the legions, stronger and better than before, so that we don't have to use them. The barabarians will fear us, they won't mess with us. We're gonna build a wall, we're gonna have a border. We're gonna negotiate SMART deals with Parthia, we're not gonna get screwed by them anymore. We'll have a wall, and people are going to come into our country, but they are going to come in LEGALLY. LEGALLY.

At one point in the 390s-400s the two parts of the empire were close to all out war because Stilicho desperately wanted control over the East so fomented a crisis in Dalmatia and dropped an army in ERE territory in Greece and Dalmatia, ostensibly to attack Alaric's Visigothic horde.

Total War Attila

Also in EU4, Byzantines starts with two provinces in the middle of very hostile turks, mamluks and greedy venetians. Also Last patch made it possible to reform into the "real" Roman Empire without importing it from Crusader Kings 2.

Is it even possible to save Rome in Attila? From what I've heard the AI basically cheats and sends doomstack after doomstack until you lose
>>
>>336105628
>why did the western roman empire fall?

Civil war and the elite distancing itself from the state.

>which army defeated them?

No army defeated them. The army destroyed itself and withered away to nothing, then under a Germanic warlord called Odoacer the army deposed the final Roman emperor in 476 by attacking the palace in Ravenna. The 5th century Roman army didn't lose too many battles, it evaporated as the taxes that paid for it vanished as land was given to barbarian laeti and foederati, or fell fallow due to non-use or was left in the hands of pissed of bagaudae rebels or senators who gave up on Rome and its taxes and demands on the rich and closed themself off from the government.

>>336105825
>Goths

The Goths didn't defeat the western army. Hilariously they were probably some of the closest things the WRE had to allies especially under kings like Theodoric, they retook Spain from the Vandals and Alans and helped Aetius at the Catalaunian Plains.

>Huns

Huns got rekt and never posed much of an existential threat to the WRE since they were outside it, unlike the more dangerous settled tribes.

>Vandals

They didn't destroy any armies since North Africa had virtually no garrisons that fought against them, with them fading away as soon as wages stopped getting to them. They're probably the party most responsible for contributing to the WRE's destruction individually since Africa was exceptionally rich and urbanised and paid for the army.
>>
>>336100126
For a while they had many coups and thus the ERE didn't recognize the legitimacy of the ones in charge of the WRE, resulting in them refusing to lend assistance.

It's the fate of Empires. They were in decline for ages and almost collapsed during the 200s century but recovered somewhat and trundled on until the late 400s. They weren't beaten in a single war but many over many years. It even ceased being independent at times with Emperors being puppets of Germanic warlords.

Population disparity matters a lot here as well, huge parts of the late Roman armies weren't of Roman origin, instead being recruited from the provinces and being of dubious loyalty to Rome. The barbarian hordes that chipped away at the Empire over the centuries won partly from very long attrition.

Different one. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theoderic_the_Great Germanic names are annoying.

>Okay then who sacked Rome in 410 and 455? And 546?

>410

The Visigoths. If you've read any of the primary sources you'll know that the entire thing was a debacle but had absolutely no impact on the empire besides causing a soul searching exercise among Christians. Alaric didn't want to sack Rome, he was holding a gun to Honorius' balls but the dumb fuck emperor sat in Ravenna useless and weak, Alaric just wanted rank and privilege for himself and his people e.g. land and magister militum title. When talks finallly began some retarded Roman officer attacked the two sides at the negotiating table, causing Alaric to sack a city which by 410 had absolutely no importance whatsoever. It wasn't even the capital anymore.

>455

The Vandals. Rome was even more marginal by then.

>546

The Ostrogoths i'm assuming. The WRE had fallen by then.

if we're being honest?

you can't. at that point Western Rome was in its death throes, a sick man protesting ineffectually as the carrion birds pick at his flesh.

Majorian was the last light of the WRE, whe he was assassinated the fate of Rome was sealed.
>>
>>336109451
In 395 you definitely could have saved the west. It was 410 that its fate became sealed. It was at that point that Britain left the empire, Constantine III rebelled against the emperor in Rome and marched his army against Honorius leaving a massive horde of barbarians to wander through Gaul and Spain, before the Vandal section eventually crossed into Africa. If Constantine III hadn't risen up, Honorius had died or Stilicho hadn't been assassinated it is very likely that the 406 Rhine crossing might have been repelled and nothing ever happened.

It is a meme that empires are fundamentally doomed to die. The Roman Empire was a hyperpower, its death was only certain the moment it became impossible to dislodge the organised barbarian groups within the frontiers.
>>
>All these historyfags here on /v/
I fucking love you guys
>>
>>336100032

Abandon the frontier territories, focus on rebuilding at home.

Restructure the political and military system; use a strictly hereditary inheritance system, and strip power from the generals. Reorganize the army and use a mix of incentives and strict punishment to rebuild esprit de corps and loyalty to Rome.
>>
>>336109667
It's impossible for an 8 year old to have resisted the machinations of politics to prevent Stilicho's execution, and Stilicho's ability to curb the barbarian incursions and local revolts was the only thing keeping the WRE intact.

The thing is Constantius was legitimately fucking good. If he hadn't died so early he might even in the early 420s salvaged the whole thing. It was the power vacuum after his death that led to constant civil wars between Felix, Aetius, Bonifacius etc. which also led to the Vandals being invited into Africa tipping things over into "oh God what the shit" territory. I've always thought Stilicho and Aetius (though both great) are slightly overrated due to the whole last of the Romans meme. After Stilicho shit certainly did go downhill, but I wouldn't see he was the only thing. He wasted so much time and effort engaging in political machinations with the East that if he had remained any longer his reputation among modern readers might have become very different.

Well I didn't mean he explicitly said it, but there's always an undercurrent in discussions like this, especially by people who like to parallel the modern day to antiquity. It's pretty cliche for historians to comment on the parallels between modern empires and the Roman Empire before going on smugly about the inevitability of an empire falling, as if (even if divided) Rome wasn't virtually the undisputed power of its day.

going off on a tangent here but Stilicho deserves to be called the Last of the Romans because he was pretty steadfast and loyal all things considering. considering the political climate of Rome (just in general) having somebody like Stilicho around was one of the best things Honorius could have wished for.

His existence was definitely a boon for Honorius, since the guy was completely useless in every single way and Stilicho was a pretty competent general. His issue was that he had a one track mind, obsessed with getting control over the east and it seriously compromised his ability to get shit done. Stilicho even let the Visigoths survive when he had the opportunity to wipe them out as a danger to Rome forever, for the express purpose of using them to fight the East. By the standards of the day it was nothing special, sure, but stuff like that is pretty damning to a man heralded as the saviour of the empire. He was only loyal to Honorius because the guy was so piss weak and having a man like that on the throne meant that he could pretty much have free reign to do what he want. A shame that engendered so much hatred and resentment, but shit, that was 5th century Rome for you.

>can't beat AI on easy without heavy losses
What do you do in battles? Do you just line everything up in a straight line and send them towards a single enemy unit?

name a better strategy

Not him but sending all your units at a SINGLE enemy unit is indeed a bad idea, as it causes your army to turn into a disorganized clump that can be surrounded and shit on.

It's better to have them stay as a straight line, as long as it can go without stretching it too thin, and move them forward in that fashion, using skirmishers and cavalry to bait the AI into charging your lines. Then use units at the edges of the formation to punch through and attack their flanks collapse their line.

Surround them using cavalry and using an infantry formation as b8
