Well for a JRPG, the story and characters for one. The feeling of adventure and progression. Not being forced to do monotonous, repetitive, and generic tasks. Pacing is very important. Character development and fleshing should be appropriately placed. You should be rewarded for going out of your way to explore, but you shouldn't be forced into doing it. And obviously, the gameplay should actually have you using your brain, as well as being engaging.
That's what I think makes a good JRPG.

Why do people like Star Ocean? I tried out 2 and 3 and just couldn't get into them. The battle system is garbage. Like fuck I swear Eternal sonata or Ni no Kuni is better. The 2 skills only per range is so gay. The models in 3 were absolutely horrible, mainly the childhood friend and brown loli. And the music was mediocre for the most part. The battle themes were really good though. Between 2 and 3, I got further in 2. I liked the characters more in it. I stopped some hours in when you exit the cave with the witch.

I replay SO3 once every couple years because it's a good game and I replay good games, and I have to say you are full of shit, even knowing the entire game front and back you aren't beating story in under 45 hours unless you skip every scene like a cuck, and postgame is at LEAST another 25 hours even in normal mode; in 4D it's another 50+ hours because even normal fights take forever because of the HP/stat modifiers.
And that's all assuming you know the game front and back, your first clear without a guide in fucking easy mode is going to be around 60 hours just for the main story and another 60 trying to figure out how the fuck to do everything in postgame.

Valkyrie Profile is 15 hours, Suikoden 1/2 are less than 20, Final Fantasy games are so easily broken that they're speed ran for under 10 all the time. Some faggot rummaging through a game in foreign language doesn't tell me anything about side content it has, so that really tells me little about what the game actually is.
