Whether it be censoring, releasing games late, keeping region lock, trying not to release games, casualizing games to the point where they aren't even playable anymore, making short gimmick filled rehashes, and so on. Emerald and Platinum basically took their same gen games and put them in one with more stuff and improvements on old stuff. HGSS mostly rides on nostalgia and I remember when they came out I felt they were a bit lacking vs. Crystal but they were still enjoyable. The focus on online vs. singe player hadn't completely taken over yet which it did in X/Y and ORAS.
