Gamecube was great because it still managed to have a lot of third party support. I'm pretty sure if you swept GCN's third party games under the rug, you'd be looking at a few gems and some mediocrity, which would only look a tiny bit more appealing than the Pii U's library, mostly because Metroid and F-Zero..

It will be remembered as the underrated undersold console that had a Pokémon fighting game, a make your own Mario levels game, a Zelda beat em up, the best Donkey Kong platformer, and Kirby and Yoshi games with beautiful inspired art direction.
When these IPs go to shit within the next 4-8 years when no one buys the NX Chromecast subscription gaming dongle and the Nintendo mobile games flush the company's integrity down the toilet, the Wii U will be remembered as the last bastion of great Nintendo games that everyone ignored.
Everyone will clamor for one to play the best last Nintendo titles, but the Gamepad batteries will have died and screens will have burned out, and it will be prohibitively expensive to get them repaired or mod your own to play these games that most people ignored.

Pretty much this, although I think the Wii U wasn't that great, it'll just be historically compared to the pieces of shit that are the PS4 and XB1 and people will be amazed that it sold the least out of them
It will be much the same as the PS4 and Xbone. Too many ports called remakes, sequels called reimagings, and rehashes called sequels. Notable mostly for the few hidden gems and a huge waste of momentum likely due to the awful choice of console name.
Seriously, if the system was called the Super Wii it would have at least another 2 million sales by now and certainly would have had a better launch.
It will be the new meme console. The current meme console is the gamecube, which replaced the dream cast. In 10 years the hipsters will be claiming the wii u was the perfect system with a VAST array of top quality gamefs but obviously here in 2016 we know that's not the case
Revisionist history will note the wii u as a "god tier underrated console", just like the GameCube

The gamecube had exceptional first party support which birthed classics like super smash bros melee, windwaker, super mario sunshine, metroid prime, animal crossing, and pikmin
And don't forget the third party support: resident evil 4, eternal darkness, Tales of symphonia, baten kaitos
