Is he right, /v/?
>>
Yes, he is.
First Person Games on Console are, were and will always be atrocious.
>>
>psx
the fuck is dat
>>
>>336033289

Yes, he is.

I honestly cannot fathom how anyone out there thinks that thumbsticks are just fine for controlling a FPS. The only reason anyone can ever hit anything is because they all have "aim assist" up the ass.

americans call PS1 that way

You missed the point of that image.
Alien Resurrection was one of the first games to implement the aiming system every FPS uses nowadays. That's why the reviewer commented on it.
Before A:R, console FPS games controller layouts were even worse, but people were used to it.

Yes he is.

That control scheme was so atrocious that something as utterly absurd as "auto-aim" had to be invented and used in every game thereafter.

>Before A:R, console FPS games controller layouts were even worse, but people were used to it.

No, they were better.

They understood that fine aim was just not practical using the shitty controls of consoles so they focused more on the player having to control their position rather than their aim, something console controllers can do just fine.

Nowadays you don't have to worry about either. I can't remember the last time I played a shooter that actually expected me to dodge a projectile.
>>
>>336033289
This was probably one of the best shooters of the era and it was almost completely overlooked because of how awful its source material was and review practices that were even worse then than they are now.

I wish there were more FPS with difficult survival horror mechanics. The closest we get now are early access griefing simulators.
>>
>>336034512
>>336034046
What was the previous control scheme?
>>
>>336034046
No, he's just retarded.

In old PSX shooters everyone walked around like mechs. It worked somewhat, but it was really fucking weird.

Meanwhile, the N64 shooters had controls so bad, nobody could even play them properly. Forward/backward movement and turning on the stick, up/down aiming and strafing on the C buttons.

Look at the guy too stupid to know how to change the controls in Perfect Dark and laugh.
>>

>arrows to move
>hold R1 + arrows to aim
or something like that. no analog sticks involved
I think different games tried its own types of FPS controls, but I remember not having any problems with PS1 Medal of Honor games.
>>
>>336035227
D-Pad to move forwards/backwards/turn
Shoulder buttons to strafe
Other shoulder buttons to cycle weapons
X - fire
Circle - crouch
Square - Jump
Triangle - Use/reload
>>
>>336033289
>PSX

Errrr, they always called it PS1 bud, you underage or sumfin?
>>
>>336035227

There wasn't really a standard.

If I recall correctly one of the most common was shoulder buttons for strafing, d-pad/left thumbstick for forwards/backwards/turning, auto-aim on the vertical but not on the horizontal.

A lot of them just had lock on aiming and often during lock on the turn control would automatically become a strafe control instead.

You're one of those people.

PsOne. It says right on it

I've never had a problem with modern FPS console controls. Anyway, I played TimeSplitters 2 a few weeks ago and remembered how much I preferred the old style of aiming.

Might aswell just play a fucking railshooter.
This shit is atrocious.

I'm so glad the Rare FPS controls didn't become the industry standard. They are so shit. People might bitch on Halo, but at least it standardized the perfect console shooter controls.

>>336033289
Yes, if I wanted to play a flight simulator I'd play a game with airplanes

Well hey now that's not entirely true. I always turn OFF aim assist in any game I play, and I still do decent.
>>

Are they actually saying the control scheme is terrifying, or is this the equivalent of saying Booberry cereal is full of "spooky" marshmallows?
>>
>>336036059
>Might aswell just play a fucking railshooter.

Hey guess what you casual fuck. This is a tactical stealth spy FPS.

In Perfect Dark a single burst of SMG fire in your direction kills you. If you don't think about what you're going to do before you do it, you are kill.
>>
Good old Gamespot.
>>
>>336036369

It helps that you can just aim at your leisure from cover and enemies aren't very aggressive anymore.

I like to "test" AI in shooters by seeing if the enemy will ever actually do anything if I just hunker down in cover and do absolutely nothing. It often takes a long time for the game to punish this behavior these days, in some games they never do. I guess we can thank regenerating health for this shit.
>>
>>336033887
you get used to it, best way to play Halo is auto aim off with the sniper or whatever hard hitting head shot single shot or burst weapon is available like the battle rifle or CE pistol

Absolutely. Twin sticks aiming sucks ass and requires an assload of auto aim in order to be playable. The N64 Rareware shooters and Turok games were much better and they only used one goddamn stick.

Autoaim was a mistake.
>>
>>336038281
The kind of auto aim in twin stick games literally locks the middle of the screen on an enemy. N64 games auto aim were more like Doom and Wolf 3D where you had to at least focus the screen on the enemies yourself.
>>
If i'm reading it right in my drunken state that is the control scheme that timesplitters used and thus by extension is perfect.
>>
>>336036102
Yes, scary as fuck.

>>
>>336038667
TS and TS2 were the perfect console shooters because you could aim with mouse preciseness as long as you were looking at your enemy because moving the analog stick would just move your reticle to that part of the screen and it wasn't until you moved it to the edge that your viewpoint actually began to move.

And TS had a better turning speed than shooters that had similar control schemes like Goldeneye, anyway.
