you can make your own role, that's what makes it an RPG. every sidequest has multiple endings and every main level can be approached differently. the only forced outcomes are the boss fights, which was unfortunate but everyone knows what happened there.

You can roleplay as completely insane, by making contradictory or inconsistent choices for example, and the game doesn't shoehorn you into good/evil or some other arbitrary alignment

I thought it was pretty good about setting your character up and giving him some character, but allowing you to choose how he deals with obstacles.
I think more direction for your character is nice if it's handled carefully. Blank slate, self-inserts just tend to kill stories. Maybe it's because the folks making the popular games with blank slates characters are fucking retarded but, eh.
