when i was young and had gold I basically used my 'main' pokemon exclusively until it was overlevelled, then occasionally put other pokemon first to give them a little exp. I had played Pokemon Red when it came out as a kid and then didn't play any other Pokemon until Soul Silver.
The nostalgia pangs in that entire region were already strong, but this fight, especially the music, was too intense for me and I had goosebumps.
It was done extremely well and I hope there's another Pokemon with as much extra content as SS/HG again, but I remain doubtful.

I caught every rare encounter in Safari Zone in my playthrough of Virtual Console Red within an hour or two. Scyther, Kangaskhan, Tauros, Chansey, the whole deal. A while ago I started a new save file on FireRed and spent a whole day chasing after those same shitters. I still haven't caught Chansey or Kangaskhan. And as far as I recall you can't even get Chansey from Cerulean Cave like in the originals.

Thus, you can program your own instructions and then save them into the SRAM, so they persist after saving.
