Sometimes I get the feeling that this was their plan all along. I'm not sure if Mark Kern was part of the big plan, but I think that the Nost team was waiting like "C'mon, I dare you to come shut us down. We have the greatest community, fans, and enthusiasts that will spread the word and fight back so we can all truely get what we really need/wanted."
I too would also like to thank the Nost. team and everyone else that took part.
Normally, in a situation like this I would have just said "eh, whatever" and just went to go play another game. This time, however, I felt like "Hell naw, time to put my foot down, I'm not going to accept this crap!" I had no idea this would get as far as it did, but we kept pushing.
This isn't over yet, but I have my wallet open ready to play some Legacy server.

It's a very good sign. They're probably looking to hire Nost and/or acquire the Nost source code, things they've no reason to care about unless they wanted to finally run legacy servers. Having Nost endorsement by Blizzard is the best thing for everyone, and although it'll most likely mean we'll have to pay a sub to play on it, I don't think anyone would complain about that. I'd pay a sub and start over from scratch if it came with official support, security, and no possibility of a shutdown. Private servers might be free, but they're usually broken out the ass, run terribly, aren't secure, have little to no support, and can eventually shutdown, taking all your work with it. Official servers would avoid all of these, and be worth paying for.
We could also get some hosted in the US, which would be a dream come true for Americans like myself, who are crippled playing on foreign servers. They don't host in the US because of legal problems, which official backing would totally remove. Regardless of where they hosted here, it would still be a winner for everyone vs playing on something on the other side of the world.

Even Pristine Servers would just be the same content, but with some auxiliary features taken out. If Blizzard wanted to recreate vanilla servers, even if through some miracle they didn't have the source code and databases for older versions of the server software, they wouldn't have needed Nostalrius devs to do the job. Open source emulation, near identical to Nostalrius on most accounts, has existed a long time and if Blizzard actually wanted legacy servers, they could have made their own MaNGOS fork long ago.
And more realistically, they do have the source code no matter how many bullshit claims they make about it. Of course, if they wanted to integrate legacy servers to current Battle.net for example, it'd take some work (both in terms of the client and the server) and you realistically couldn't use the old code completely as-is (for example, they'd want to fix some exploits and security issues, and the server probably uses libraries that also need to be updated for security or other reasons and they might not be backwards-compatible), but is it REALLY such a big deal? We're probably talking about hundreds of man-hours but considering the available resources and no pressing schedule, no.

They always state the code is gone but it's just the server scripting. All the assets are in the vanilla client which is readily available. If they use nosts scripting or have them finish it its already mostly complete. Some bugs needed fixed but AQ and naxx are the only raids that weren't finished either and AQ was in testing when the server went down so its mostly done.

Sounds good in theory, terrible idea in practice, it will just cause history to repeat and people want vanilla servers again, it's inevitable, it's how we got to this point we're in now.
A better option is individual servers for each expansion, with a one direction, permanent transfer from an older to a newer.
Finish vanilla/get tired of it/didn't enjoy it as much as you wanted and don't want to abandon your character? You can move to the TBC server, ect. That way people who want vanilla can keep it forever more, people who want to move on can take their character and move.
Although it's Blizzard, that step up to the next expansion would probably cost $25 per character.

I think people called Deadmines DM before Dire Maul came out. After it actually came out Dire Maul was more relevant than Deadmines so people started calling it DM too. legacy servers are a good thing, honestly I don't understand why anyone is complaining. You think it will take away development time from the current game? Blizzard still did one patch for basically 2 years for WOD without legacy servers, adding a new server that requires no content development time is not going to fix that issue, you've got a bigger problem.
Besides, it's important to keep as much of this stuff archived as possible. For the most part old books can still be experienced, same with old movies or plays or whatever else, but games don't have an equivalent, especially multiplayer games like this. It's a part of gaming history. If you're against it, you're an idiot, that's really all there is to it.

The specs didn't work
A good portion of people who played classic or still play on privates can confirm this. and yet it's still the most fun you can have in a wow game. Classic just makes it so easy to interact and talk with people and have genuine video game RP and adventures. from lvl 1 to 60 you can have a great time, unlike on the current expansions, where you simply have to plow through lvl 1 to the cap as fast as possible to even start playing the game.
Might be different for some people, it's just personal and anecdotal experience. But i've played since mid classic and on many private servers over the years. Again, the most active and social communities that existed were on classic. Maybe it was just me.
