The way it works is that you create a faction dependant admiral. So you can play any faction you want, but you need to make an admiral for it that has separate progression to your other admirals.

Also, handing 40k style space combat in 3d space simply would not work.
You'd have to do some sort of boring as shit homeworld style combat, where micromanaging ships is minimal, and they basically just auto home on each other and bast each other with lasers and shit.
No ramming, no positional gameplay, zoning the enemy with torpedoes and bombs, no rapid outmanouvering of your opponent, boarding etc.
In short, it would be BORING as fuck.

M8, Battlefleet Gothic is all about positioning.
Adding a 3rd dimension to the gameplay would make it extremely fucking convoluted to play, and hardly add anything to the actual positional gameplay.
Also, broadsides, which the whole game is built around, don't work in 3d space intuitively at all.

Tyrant and Gothic. Upgrade their rotation speed and ramming damage, upgrade torpedo speed for maximum keks.
For skills I use taunt, transfer shields and that skill that fills up your combustion gauge.
Cult mechanicus favor, one of them has a micro warp jump skill.
It's hilarious when eldar think they got away from me and I just jump in front of them oriented directly towards them.
Remember to fire your torpedoes in closest range possible (but not too close or they won't activate).

I'm using those two light cruisers from the beginning (one of them never got destroyed, 42 battles and counting) + two regular cruisers (Tyrant and Gothic). I have one battlecruiser (Overlord), but I only use it when the game is 700 points.
Remember to hit Brace for Impact just before ramming and after a time hit full stop, let the enemy get away a little, turn if you have to, then hit full speed ahead and hit him again.
You can also use turn left or right so you can set up the enemy for a ramming with a another ship. Also, remember to focus all your guys on one enemy, so they go down faster.
I once wasted chaos legendary battleship with three rammings + torpedoes with just 2 cruisers in like under a minute.

Dauntlesses are great. Stick Marine favor and the extra teleporter on them and they become nasty infighters. Plus they're dirt cheap, so you can always fit one in somewhere.
