Let's have a spooky survival horror thread.

>What survival horror game(s) are you playing right now?

>Your favourite survival horror game/franchise of all time?

>Any hidden gems you'd recommend?

>Your thoughts on the state of the genre today?
>>
This thread is a good representation of the spot the genre is in: dead in the water
>>
Not playing any right now, though I'd love to hear about some good ones coming to PC soon.

Best of all time is SH2 & SH3, RE2, The Suffering, Condemned, Haunting Ground, and Dead Space.
>>
>>336002602

Does Harvester count?
>>
Outlast 2 is coming I guess. Otherwise the genre is pretty dead.
>>
There's Night Cry, which is the spiritual successor to Clock Tower.
Although most people say it so so quality.
I baught it , but haven't played it yet.
>>
>>336003434
Night Cry was alright, I guess. I know I shouldn't be judging a game on its budget, but man, that budget...
>>
I want a reverse survival horror game where I'm the monster hunting down stupid fucking teenagers for once.

Funny you should say that, although it multi-player.
Dead By Daylight.
>>
I'm playing through SOMA. I'm at the part where Catherine(?) warns me about a blind faceless robot or some shit. Then I went down some stairs into the bedrock of the facility. Really spooked out. There's obvious buildup going on for the monster. Speaking of, are these robots designed by the crazy asian that convinced everyone to kill themselves for muh continuity? Because when I am on the ocean floor and see black crablike tendrals spearing into the facility I think ALIENS. What is the deal with these robots anyways? Why are they so monstrous?
>>
>>336002602
survival horror is dying because developers have not found a clever reason as to why players should survive.

"Because" is not a good enough answer.
>>
>>336004810
What the hell are you talking about? Is this meant to be read with 7 layers of sarcasm? The reason players should survive is so they can beat them game and get scared along the way.
>>
>Still no game where you can build your own haunted house/place from scratch with its own back story and event triggers

Ghost master 2 when?
>>
>>336004323
You will find out everything if you finish the game, and focus on the story. My only downside in the game is that certain explanations for plot elements are occasionally either in optional dialogue or spoken so little about in standard dialogue that it's extremely easy to miss.
>>
>>336004810
To be honest, gaming in its entirety is practically dead. After the stagnation of the AAA industry, and the rise and fall of indie gaming, the medium is now probably at its worst. I've stopped paying attention to most AAA/indie development (aside from very few studios that still have my attention) because I honestly don't feel like looking for a gold nugget in a pool of shit. It's not just survival-horror that's overdone and just forgotten completely by almost all AAA studios.
>>
2012-2013 were good years for horrors but now it went fuck itself

Siren and Fatal Frame 3
Probably Silent Hill with Fatal Frame right behind
Everyone already knows the best ones so I'll talk about the ones with some flaws that are still worth it
Rule of Rose is great story-wise but the gameplay is absolute shit and the loading times are ass, you should watch it
ILLBLEED and D2 are both really weird and worth a shot, ILLBLEED's gameplay is pretty bad though, D2's is all right but there's a lot of backtracking.
There are a lot of old FMV games that are neat if not that scary now. I'd recommend Sanitarium, Harvester and The 7th Guest. Phantasmagoria is okay but takes ages to get started.
As for freeware games or older games, I'd recommend the SNES Clock Tower, the first Alone in the Dark, Ib, and The Witch's House. Corpse Party is overrated as fuck, don't bother unless you're intro gore shit.

Genre is dead, hopefully it'll revive so I can add more games to my collection. I think the most recent one I justified adding was Siren: Blood Curse. Does anyone know if there's been good recent games? Was Night Cry worth buying?

The original Fatal Frame is still probably my fav survival horror game of all time. Siren and SH2 are up there as well.

I wish Tecmo would start developping Fatal Frame games for PC ;_;

RE1

RE1 is the best survival horror, but the first Silent Hill is my favourite game overall.

>gems
Most good ones are well known already. I think Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare for PS1 was a pretty nice and underrated RE clone experience. The Note for PS1 has some hilarious voice acting, but the game itself is a weird first-person game about lighting candles and closing drapes.

>the genre today
Dead, buried, absolute horseshit. Just a bunch of shitty third person action games marketed as survival horror.

FFS.

Any game where you take on the role of Rambo armed to the teeth with assault weapons is NOT a horror game.

I mean how can you feel fear if you're a trained soldier armed to the teeth.

People will point to Resident Evil but forget that in RE you were just a cop with a handgun in most cases. Leon was a rookie cop and Claire was just a civilian.
>>
>>336012341
so you're part of the "pussy who can't fight back horror games" group? survival horror is surviving horror(s). some people are afraid of spiders, clowns, dolls and other things. back when i was 14 i couldn't go through HL2 Episode 2 because of the maggots freaking me out so i just didn't play the game at all. as long as it has some sort of horror in it whether it be in any shape or form and you have to survive it, that's a survival horror.

I'm emulating Kuon right now, it's a lot better than I expected. Not very scary though but the graphics are beautiful and the silkworm concept is fascinating.
My fav franchise would be Fatal Frame/Project Zero. I even bought a Wii U for FF5. Too bad it was shit.
The one hidden gem I can't recommend enough is Hellnight (also called Dark Messiah) for the ps1. So atmospheric, so scary, I love everything about it.
My thoughts of the genre today is that it's dead. It's dead and gone and there's no reviving it. SH is dead, RE is shit, FF is shit, PC indie horrors have never been good... PS1-PS2 era was the golden era of survival horrors.
>>
Anyone tried the Corpse Party games? Are they scary or just gore-bait?
>>
>>336013662
Good taste bro.

I'll have to check out Hellnight.

I'm not as pessimistic about the genre as you though. I think we'll see a resurgence at some point.

Horror has always been a niche genre anyway. Whether we're talking about video games or movies.

It was a big improvement over the first game in a lot of ways, but I hated how the ghost designs delved into pale human that walked slow and teleported.

Damned was a great spooky game to play with friends.

I honestly don't see how.

Why do so many survival horror games have you die instantly when a threat gets to you?

I don't mind not being able to kill an enemy or whatever but why can't you defend yourself to a t least stun a monster or something? It gets kind of old seeing hallway hide in a closet simulators.

Ninja mask seems like the best choice first of all if you're forced to use a gun or a bow then you fucked something up already and considering both zombies and bandits are always in packs I'm not seeing much use of unlimitted ammo if I'm gonna die soon anyway.
>>
>>336017503
Depends on the type of zombies, it really does. If we are talking about the type that are slow (i.e Walkers) then I could see most of humanity surviving that easily, hopefully myself included. I would rush to my home town in my truck, pick up my family, then go out to my grandfather's farm and set up a fortress till it blew over or we had to sustain ourselves. I know enough about wilderness survival and I live in a place with a lot of flat land and not a lot of people so it wouldn't be too bad.

But if they can run? Fuck. That. If they are anything like zombies in L4D then I take my gun, drive home, put my family out of their misery and then do the same for myself.
>>
>>336017503
I have no combat training other than >karate from when I was a middle schooler and no access to a well or firearms or any of that shit. I'd probably die. >>336018181

>>
>>336017871
The first had better pacing and a better mix of puzzles, combat, exploration and jump scares.

FF2 had a lot of backtracking and it was a lot more linear (i.e. you couldn't leave certain areas until you'd done x). FF1 gave you a lot more freedom.

Just my opinion of course.

I should also mention that FF1 was genuinely scary and oppressive. I had to conserve film and healing items and every ghost battle was a tense experience.

In FF2 the battles were more of a tedious obstacle that I had to get through to progress the story. In fairness, perhaps I should have played on a higher difficulty setting.

Not sure which of those I would choose, too many good choices. If you could get a group together with each person choosing one of each would be great.

As for the question of if I would survive or die I'm not sure. I could see myself hesitating to go out into a crowd of zombies, but maybe being able to force myself if I really needed something or someone saved. Although I look over my shoulder a lot in places where I need to be cautious, like the cemetary nearby where there have been known kidnappings, I tend to get lost in my mind a little too long so I could see myself getting grabbed from behind. Also I would do terrible in a gun fight because I would spend too much time hiding behind cover.

I'm really hoping that Capcom won't fuck up the RE2 remake. Probably the last chance the genre has to get something really fantastic.

I've been playing Revelations a lot even though it's way more into action territory. The raid mode is pretty fun.

here's a list of survival horror games an anon gave me in another thread awhile back. might be some obscure stuff worth checking out for some of you:

Carrier for Dreamcast
Overblood for PS1
Clock Tower 3 and Haunting Ground
Rule of Rose
Obscure and Obscure the Aftermath
Onimusha
Galerians for PS1 and Galerians: Ash for PS2
Martian Gothic for PS1

I haven't watched a Romero film in 2 decades. Are they supernatural like TWD? In TWD you can fucking remove their heads and the head won't die untill you fuck it's brain. You can chain a zombie in the bottom of a lake and it'll try to eat you from the bottom until some sort of brute trauma fucks its brain, I think they even somehow ward off most animals. Birds and fish definitely.
>>
>>336005497
Been trying to discuss why tho. Are tasteless 12 year olds really generating enough revenue that developers forego making good games for the people that actually enjoy them? I feel that if they spent a little more making better games more actual fans would start buying again generating more revenue and the casuals will still buy and benefit indirectly from having to play decent games.

>FF2
>Most of the ghosts just walk slowly towards you
>Walk up to ghosts and did point blank zero shots left and right
>Only enemy I had trouble with were the twins and the chained guy until I learned to back up after snapping him
>Only game over I got was from running to the exit without trying to rescue Mayu

Does higher difficulties make the second game better or is it just "We have more health and do more damage!"? I hope the third is better.
>>
>>336018491
I'm glad people here are rational. I'd try to survive if they were the slow ones too. As far as dealing with the humans that would suck. Most of us aren't combat trained, closest I have is playing rugby and paintball. Just try to remember to shoot blind to scare then just run, it's hard as fuck to hit a moving target.
The actual hardest thing is exhaustion. Try sprinting/crouching/carrying equipment/ trying to aim a firearm. Never done it but I could maybe do it for ten minutes and I currently work out.

>But if they can run? Fuck. That. If they are anything like zombies in L4D then I take my gun, drive home, put my family out of their misery and then do the same for myself.
That makes sense if they're smart savage sadists like Crossed. But if they're mindless running rage virus brutes like L4D or 28 Days then it'd be fucking stupid to kill your family. The zombies would have to pinpoint you fucks first and they don't have magic to stop them from deteriorating.

Does Nobihaza count? Currently playing the VX remake, going to play all of them.

This game also made me try the classics. Biohazard 0 was fantastic. I played it first though and regret it. 1 was shit compared to it.

I then tried to reinstall Dying Light because I was hungry for more zombies. Uninstalled an hour later.

you're out of your mind.

Well, I kinda disagree.
You can turn DS into a horror game if you limit yourself to items and certain healing items
>>
Been thinking of replaying Shadow Man. Shits got a great atmosphere.
>>
>>336019853
It still isn't a fucking survival horror game. Just because a game has a scary part doesn't make it survival horror.
>>
>>336019853
By that logic FTL is a horror game because scrap is scarce.
>>
>>336011324
What about Alien Isolation? It was a breath of fresh air and AAA.
>>
>>336017278
Agreed, except the ghost monster was kinda shit and certain maps had fuck awful level design, the deer monster and mary were scary as fuck though

Nintendo have the rights now
How was 5 anyway?

People compare it to MGSV, take of that what you will.

replaying F.E.A.R and its expansions

>Favorite
Fatal Frame. have the first 3 on ps2 that ill be replaying soon

>Hidden gems
not exactly hidden but that Spooky's House of Jumpscares was alright

>Thoughts
shame this genre is dying out and ignored most of the time. Alien Isolation and Layers of Fear are the only decent titles to emerge from the last couple years

>smart zombies
So Bioshock? Alan Wake? Project Zomboid lets you choose whether the zombies can use doors, run, and shit.
>>
>>336018628
ROTD also had the first running zombies didn't? That movie is underrated as fuck.
>>
>>336020315
Bioshock doesn't have zombies.
>>
>>336020495
Why not? Because the player can't get infected? If a horror game made you immune to the crazy virus would you discredit it too?
>>
>>336020589
They are disfigured humans you fucking imbecile not every humanoid enemy is a zombie.
>>
>>336020946
then define smart zombie you dumb fuckhead. what a vague term.
>>
>>336021026
Oh I don't know having the need to actually spread the fucking virus like any proper zombie but with the ability to use tools? Bioshock enemies have absolutely nothing to do with zombies retard.
>>
Is it strange to find the old horror games of PS1 more gory and spooky than recent horror games?
It's just something about the old graphics that I like about. The gore is more colorful than the ones you find in modern games, where it's all dark red goo.

Maybe it would depend on how well the situation is being handled, the amount of normal to infected, and more importantly how many of the zombies are just of the 'normal' type. And as far as I know those zombies can't be fooled with masking yourself to sneak around them. They know if your healthy or not and they will actively go after you. Now if there wasn't too many and the majority were normal types then sure I would try. But if anything like a tank comes up then bang bang everyone is dead.

I'm playing The Last of Us right now on PS4 and I think it's pretty good. I got it like 2 years ago but never played it and got a little burned out on FO4. It's got some creepy parts, but it's just so well written compared to FO4. Actual real sounding conversations.

But it does feel like a Snake Eater/Fallout 3 combo at times.

Been playing alien: infestation. It was sold to me as a metroidvania and it reminds me of fusion. You have a team of marines and when one dies, it's gone forever. Not exactly pure "horor" but pretty fucking good.
Dunno why there's no horror gameso n the ds and 3ds though. It seems like they would work perfectly there.

You really don't need to specialize if you've played as many video games as the average person who's heard of Bloodlines. You will be swimming in so much money you can buy as much ammo as you want to compensate for low gun skill.

Nanashi no Geemu? Dementium? Corpse Party?

>The Last of Us
>Scary
Now I'm not a meme pouting little shit like half of /v/ and I really like the game even if the DLC is pandering trash, but what's exactly scay about TLoU? I remeber playing through it without giving a single fuck, jumping around the place and knifing bitches in the face to the point that clickers seemed like a joke, and this was on hardest difficulty. I mean, I don't even remember any jumpscares, only the place with a boatmaster guy seemed unsettling.

First time I hear of it. Funny that it's called nanashi :^)

Maybe I guess unsettling is a better word. Spores and fungus fucking gross me out so that's a big part of it. Not really scary, you are correct.

The first survival horror game was Shiryou Sensen: War of the Dead, which predates Capcom's Sweet Home AND Project Firestart by two years.
