I got stuck in that stupid fucking forest for so long when I was a kid. Ended up just letting a friend go through that part and playing the rest of the game.
Thankfully figured it out in later playthroughs

But you get up to shenanigans with your old ones in the Crystal Palace. God, I loved those ghosts. Between that and murdertown it's just delicious.
But 3 does have both the mansion and tons of character development for the boss before you can finally take him. Just a really nice arc. They're both excellent.

There's practically no story, either. You don't even meet the boss or hear any rumors about him or anything until right before you fight him. He's not doing anything at all to the people in the village and then there's this random guy you fight.
The atmosphere and tone suddenly getting more serious again, the aesthetics being amazing both in the regular and dream world, and the music being so chill and different from the usual Mario music.
