Skinship is no longer interactive(honestly it took forever in the JP version when I played so I barely care). Nothing significant was removed, this isn't like Four Swords when Tetra Tracker just didn't exist for the US.

Metroid hasn't been a big deal for them in the last few years, so I excluded it. If the franchise fares well again next generation then it could be added back. It's still a valuable IP for Nintendo, but I based my list on mostly recent events.
I thought about Pikmin for the list, but I excluded it at the last second. It's still pretty big, but not as big as the others.
I think the Yoshi games also fall somewhere in the same category as Pikmin, though it has had a bigger presence over the last couple of years with Yoshi's Woolly World and the kazoo symphony. It's also more interchangable with the Mario series than the Donkey Kong series, so there's that.
F-Zero has been pretty much off the radar for about a decade now. Hopefully it does indeed come back one day.
Star Fox was also pretty quiet (aside from a 3DS port of Star Fox 64) until the recent release of Star Fox Zero. We may be seeing more of the IP in coming years, but for now it's behind its higher contemporaries.

I'm glad I really enjoy the series. I hope they move on from this trash artstyle and make supports and story not garbage. Everyone doesn't "have" to be able to marry everyone and the ones who can get married should have a logical arc rather than anime shenanigans 3 times and a confession of love. Fates did a lot of gameplay improvements I was happy with and would like to see them fine-tuned. Pairing up wasn't broken but it was made so effective that not pairing up was often a death sentence, there should be pros and cons to pairing up to encourage more diverse play. The removal of weapon durability was great in concept but resulted in forged iron being superior to everything else I mean did anyone really use stuff that halved their stats until they acted again? Hidden weapons were neat but far too effective and magic was awful and it's trinity advantage over bows didn't help when mages have no defense and everything in Fates has decent res. Maybe the next game could add a third triangle for shapeshifters and make them more prevalent in the narrative like in Tellius

It just seemed like the franchise was more niche than that in west, what with only 3 games getting localized by that point. I just never thought things would turn out this way. I always thought that games such as Metroid and Star Fox would prosper while games such as Fire Emblem would always be in the background.
Shit though, I thought Nintendo would always be on top when I was a kid in the early 90s and look how shit turned out. Just saying, life seems strange to me, like things that seemed like they couldn't happen, have.

With the mobile news and now this, I'm just meh on FE. It will always have a special place in my heart. I think I just may be burned out because of Fates. I've have the SE since the NA launch and I'm still not done for various reasons.

3ds has a far bigger install base. Attachment rate is higher for Tropical Freeze than either FE but the Wii U has ridiculously high attachment rates due to its limited library.
The port of Returns has sold 1.5 million according to Wikipedia up to March 2014, while Awakening had 1.8 million as of May 2015. I'd say DK has the upper edge in terms of popularity if a port is keeping up with a series reviver.
Thing is, Fire Emblem's popularity is centered in Japan, and DK's popularity is mostly Western, and you know who Nintendo will favor. DK and FE are nowhere near Mario, Pokemon, Animal Crossing or Zelda level though.

FE artstyle is fine, hell is considerably better than the past games(except PoR & Radiant Dawn). Artstyle or the girls aren't the problem, its how casual-filed the series is becoming with shallow supports, over-the-top quirkiness, and lame story-telling. Fire Emblem could do far better than that. Genealogy and Path of Radiance had the best story-lines and characters so far, followed by Blazing Sword and Radiant Dawn.

Leif is probably one of the worst protogonist of the FE series along with Radiant Dawn's Micaiah. They're both poor decision makers and may be too flawed for their own good, coupled with shitty stats and unimpressive characterization.
