Nah. Games like this need to retain single releases. No need to do to this what they did to Uncharted or Gears of War. This is a loose statment, but it's rare that GOOD games get a single release with no sequels. Most of Hollywood's greatest movies only had one release.

Abyss, Symphonia, Vesperia and Graces are the best of the 2000s games. Ive heard Hearts is good if you have a vita/PSTV, and some people like Legendia too, though I havent played it. Xillia and Xillia 2 are the first of the 2010s games, and while your mileage may vary I think they were both very good.
Zestiria is the most recently released and is honestly terrible, but if you're itching for modern Tales then go ahead and try it.There is an anime for it coming out this summer so if you want the characters and plot without the bad game, watch that. Berseria is coming to the West in early 2017 so hopefully the series will recover with that.
Not so much a sequel as another game in the same universe.

Tales of the Abyssfag here, and yeah, I see your point. I guess it's just the love for the game and wanting more of it. This feeling is probably especially strong for those of us who have played through said game four or five times. There's only so much you can do in one game before you want more.
But yeah, Im proud of TotA for doing so well as a standalone. Atleast I have that comfort.

Yep, Orson Scott Card had an entire plot and world in mind for the game. They were going to a trilogy of games and then a series of graphic novels as well as a series of traditional novels to tie into the games. GlyphX just went under and no one cared about the IP because of how sub-par the sales were.
