If you get him to half health and he grows the wings and spawns a clone, he is actually EASIER to fight as long as you don't panic.
He stops attacking aggressively and gives you tons of time to take a sippy, and all his moves are slower and more telegraphed, and his phantom can be killed and it has reduced damage with all attacks.
Just get him to half health ASAP and then take it easy in the second phase
also you can parry any attack with the Red fire sword. For example, you can parry that running slam attack he does at the very start of every fight (good way to practice the parry timing)

He's fairly easy
Phase 1 he is relentless and fast, but if you try to stick to his back he will miss most attacks, and you will have easy windows
Phase 2 he is way slower and defensive and won't rush at you anymore. The clone only stays next to Pontiff and if you keep your distances they will only use their dual attacks, which are easy to evade.
You can either focus Pontiff by baiting the dual attacks then attacking when they land, or focus the clone, and then Pontiff when he's alone and you get several free hits while he resummons the clone.

Just finished the game today, all bosses. This guy was one of my favorite bosses, along with the two princes. Nameless King was easy and only took me 3 tries with a 12 vigor character wearing cloth (basically have to beat him without getting hit once).

I beat the pontiff the first time I fought him right after finding the murakumo that I had never used. Signs can typically be found right in front of his door - there should be a ton of them. Also, to clarify an earlier post, the bracelets work a lot like the Great-wood's egg sac things, i.e. they are weak points that explode for massive damage.

Item find is the single most broken mechanic in the game, more than poise, since poise isn't broken, it just doesn't exist.
Item find is legitimately broken though. Increasing it does fucking NOTHING, not because it doesn't raise the stat, but because the stat is still 100% dependent on RNG, and RNG does whatever the fuck it wants. You can have a 99% chance to get an item, but so long as you have a 1% chance to NOT get anything, but gods of gaming will find a way to make you kill thousands of fucking enemies and still toss you in that 1% of "You're fucked".
Increasing your item find wont speed up grinding in the slightest. The only thing that will is supreme luck, and there's not a fucking thing you can do about that.
I got 5 proofs in about 20 minutes, and only needed two more, so I figured, "you know what, I'll just keep going until I get those two, my item find seems to be really bringing them in.", but nope. As soon as I said that they stopped. kept killing them for 45 fucking minutes without getting a god damn thing, because the game just decided that I had enough.
Why do developers still do RNG bullshit? It's NEVER a good mechanic. There's not a single game where RNG works as a good item drop mechanic. Not, fucking, one.

Yhorm is only weak to a specific weapon, which can be found in the back of his throne room by the throne. Run in and grab it, equip it, and use it's charged up weapon art spell, you can kill him in around six hits. It unleashes a giant blast of light that was specifically made to mill Yhorm.
Siegward's character quest also ends with him joining you for the fight and making it incredibly easy. If you haven't completed that yet, attempting the boss fight has made it already too late.

I can't think of an enemy or boss yet that I haven't destroyed by using a pure STR/STM/VGR, a +5 Refined Greataxe, and a Lorethic Knight shield.
I those 2 things up at the beginning of the game and cheesed everything i've come across. It took some time to get the system down of swapping to 2H, berserk, then swapping back to shield so i can block, but that damage boost is so nice.
STR builds seem to have an edge this time around.
