Do I need to play Blood Omen first or can I skip to Soul Reaver?
Blood Omen is the best so definitely play it.

Blood omen includes that. The Story gets kinda twisted with the 2nd Soul Reaver. And with Blood Omen 2 even more. But the first two were really great.
Are there any essential mods to play this?
Got all the games in the series the other day - started to play and the control system seems fucked.

Blood omen is good, darker take on Zelda-eskque adventures.
Soul Reaver is good too, but a different genre - platform/puzzle action adventure. - play/emulate Dreamcast version for best experience.
Soul Reaver 2 is a better version of SR1 (they were intended to be a single game) with more convoluted plot. Blood Omen 2 - weakest part of the series (and considered non-canon by many due to no original devs present), a bit boring.
Defiance - an even better version of Soul Reaver, with more action elements, and somewhat better puzzle integration into the gameplay, now with ability to play as Kain.

blood omen is literally the best in the series, after that the director and writer of UNCHARTED took over and made the whole storyline a convoluted mess of pseudo meta bullshit full of plot holes and time paradoxes with every game becoming more and more linear to the point that the last game was literally a watered down DMC clone with puzzles worthy of a zelda game for babies.

BO is clumsy and too dark to see your way around.
SR suffers from an experimental 90s platformer design and an excess of cube/block puzzles.
SR2 is too simple, and the control scheme is still fucked.
Defiance has massive issues with the camera that heralds back to N64-era platforming.
