When the last time you checked your earlier PS3 games? Blu-ray discs are apparently twenty times more prone to disc rot than standard discs.

Also, buy an Ubisoft game between 2011-2014? I recommend checking them for disc rot too, regardless of whether they're for the PS3, PS4, or another console; The manufacturer they used was fucking garbage.

>>
>>335876002
Ya, AssCreedIV and Far Cry 3 seemed to get the disc rot the worst out of all the Ubisoft titles that had the issue.

You can't do anything, the reflective layer is now oxidized. The disc is 100% fucked. You can't fix it even by using a de-scratcher because the rot isn't even on the surface, it's in a layer of the disc.

Lucky for you, AssCreedIV is like $5 new these days.

Disc rot is an urban legend perpetuated by people who abuse their shit by leaving it out in the sun and handling it poorly
>>
>>335877163
I hope every disc rot denier ends up going to play their favourite game/album only to find it has rotted

There is literally nothing a person can do to prevent disc rot. It's entirely at the mercy of how well the disc is pressed by the manufacturer.
>>
>>335877163
This >>335876863 probably happened because I was too lazy to put the game back in its case and left it upside down and the sun must have been shining on it. I don't really care much, but it does suck to know any of my games could have done this due to my apathy to take care of them.

If that's the case, it sounds like you're describing a manufacturing defect rather than a phenomenon that potentially affects all discs
>>
>>335874984
Well as long as you can make backups there is no problem.
>>
>>335877598
Well first of all, it can only affect discs that use a reflective layer that can oxidize when exposed to any air (such as aluminum, which has been the standard for almost two decades now in compact discs).

Secondly, the rot can occur anywhere between immediately to thirty years. After the 30 year mark your discs are pretty much guaranteed safe, unless you physically damage/scratch it. But because of this, we won't know the quality of different discs/manufacturers until the time comes their discs might start rotting. Ubisoft had the issue already when they got the cheapest fucks they could find and had a bunch of games end up rotting (like 1 out of every 100 discs printed).

>2 bits of information of every file on your computer "age" every year.

Pure bullshit. Otherwise anti-cheat software wouldn't ban players for not having the correct file checksums.
>>
>>335876076
This.

The only time I've seen it is when I worked at a retro video game store on a copy of a Sega Saturn game that was very poorly taken care of (ie kept in a moist place).

I found that cartridge games are actually more vulnerable to things such as contacts rusting or batteries going bad (and even leaking). If you have a gameboy, take the fucking batteries out of it while you don't play it. Leaving them in will end with them leaking and corroding the battery springs in the back. This really goes for anything with a battery.

I have over 400+ ps1/ps2/ps3 games and have never experienced it myself. I still play all my retro games just fine.
>>
>>335877437

You never owned the games you bought. You just own a physical license that allows you to play that game for however long that physical license lasts.

But I agree, the consumer's rights in the digital era are a complete farce. Even though I'm just buying a license for the game, since it's not a government issued license that requires a test to pass I should be allowed to resell that license to anyone I want to.

Of all the discs I've come across, I've only had issues with DLDVD+R from Philips.

This includes Memorex CD-Rs whoch are fucking awful that i still buy anyway. If anything piracy is a nice way to undo the damage that can happen with disc rot. It's just a shame that there's so many security measures in place to prevent the consumer to make backups.

we lost a sonic 06 prototype to shitty philips discs. we got 2gb recovered but the other 4gb is all gone due to the issues. my buddy is dumping an early sonic heroes prototype for the gamecube as we speak. and then a sonic colours build. i know nintendo's discs dont die from bit rot as much so props to them

if you take anything from this post, just stay away from Philips discs at all costs. They will never hold up as long as you need them to

Averages I've kept hearing were 30-40 years, and it's one of the three main reasons computer engineers are trying to build a better medium. The other two being capacity and transfer limitations. We're already at a bottleneck when it comes to transferring data from a disc, most games need to be installed because reading off the disc isn't sufficient.
