This is one of the most incredibly consistent games I have ever played. Not a single dip in quality or enjoyment from beginning to end.

Not a single section that was notably better or worse than any other.

How the FUCK did they do it?
>>
Where the fuck is the last treasure on the Really Final Chapter?
>>
>>335857758
There is no treasure on the final level

Ah, well I guess I 100% the game then.
Even though I preferred 1 this was still a 10/10 game, I should get around to doing 3 soon.

The Wario Land series as a whole is really good. The only one I haven't finished is 3, I think I was about halfway done with it when I last played.

I don't know what the fuck it was that stymied my progress, but I literally could not progress through the game. I just didn't know where to go in the level.

I'll go back and feel ashamed about it some time in the future, I guess.

A lot of people dislike 3 because you have to earn back your powers you had in 2.
It's not that bad as people make it out to be.
>>
>>335859982
I did for a couple of secret exits because shoulder bashing into every single wall is just a tedious and unenjoyable game experience and I did not want to ruin WL2 with that nonsnese.

Treasures, on the other hand, aren't arbitrarily hidden and actually require you to explore the level, which is fun.
>>
>>335859982
doesn't the map you get at the end of the game indicate which levels have secret exists?

Games require punishment for poor play. The most those games do is make you lose coins for getting hit.
>>
I have this game boxed with manual. Worth a bit i think boxed.
>>
>>335861561
Getting hit in Wario Land 2 usually leads to having to restart a segment due to how most of the levels are designed though.

That's punishment.

>>
>>335861561
>Games require punishment for poor play

They absolutely do not actually. Explain to me how having some arbitrary restart or fail state makes a game better than just letting you retry the difficult obstacle right away.

How exactly does having to go through menus and then walk back to said obstacle improve the game? Your view is very dated and lacks imagination. There's nothing inherently wrong with punishing the player for failure but at the same time there's no reason why it HAS to also be in the game.

Take this example.

>Difficult platforming section
>Wario is almost near the top
>Enemy knocks him down and you have to start the climb all over

>Difficult platforming section
>Wario is almost near the top
>Enemy kills him requiring you to restart not only the obstacle but from the main menu and the stage and/or checkpoint

How is the latter inherently more difficult or better? It's just more time consuming. The obstacle is still there. The former lets you immediately put your skills back to the test but still makes you start the obstacle over. The latter just wastes your time.
>>
>>335861881
>>335862003

On point desu. I just booted up my 3DS to play again because of this thread and the first level has platforming over a rushing current where if you mistime a jump or are hit by an enemy the current carries you back to the beginning.

But leave it to fucking /v/ to criticize games they've never even played the first goddamn level of.
>>
>>335861561
considering that coins are the measuring stick for your ending, AND you lose time/forms, it's generally a good idea to not get hit

Have you even played the games fag. Half the power-ups and forms come from being attacked. And most of the platforming is designed in a way that the punishment for fucking up is having to go all the back to the beginning of whatever you were attempting to traverse.

It's beautifully designed in a way someone incapable of thinking outside the box, you, can't get.

wario land II (and the whole series) were developed by nintendo R&D1, nintendo's oldest and most experienced development group, and was managed by gunpei yokoi for most of its life. r&d1 made most of the game and watch games, the donkey kong games, and the handheld mario land\wario land games, as well as warioware.

>>335860194
i really want to see another proper wario land game. and a proper wario ware game, for that matter. come on, nintendo, what the fuck are you doing?
>>
>>335864881

If it's not Mario, Zelda and for whatever the fuck reason Kirby, Nintendo forgot they had it.
>>
>>335864449
i know i'm replying to a henry but i really do love the wario approach to difficulty. any game designer can say 'this is your health and if you lost it you die and you go back to a checkpoint' but wario always got really creative with it.
>>
>>335860194
The game looks and sounds great. No doubt of that.

However it wasn't very fun to play. the platforming was too easy, the treasures weren't well hidden and it felt like a chore to get them, no to mention there was little to no reason to get them.
>>
>>335865214

This guy gets it. Now modern Mario is the exact opposite way how you're supposed to do it. They still have lives and you can die but they throw these lives at you like candy. So the failure state is not only pointless and non-punishing but just becomes time-wasting.

>>
>>335863574
Yes, as a the anons said, there are emulators, the Wii one (and others) even support anaglyph 3D (red and blue glasses).

There's also a VB emulator for the Oculus Rift.
>>
>>335865464
the problem with modern mario is that they throw tons of lives at you, and then those lives disappear when you save and load the game. so you save up a bunch of lives and breeze along, never getting a game over, save, load, start with 5 lives, difficulty suddenly spikes up (unless you go farm lives)

they should really just cap the lives at 10-15 and let them persist through saves. if there's a really hard part, dump a 1-up after the checkpoint.
>>
>>335865464

It's honestly fucking nuts how crazy inventive Wario was in comparison to Mario but Wario gets credit for literally nothing. Like Mario was still just about jumping and throwing fireballs when Wario was implementing physics, momentum and element based puzzles.
>>
>>335858969
>>335860214

wario land 3 is great - it was cool re-exploring every level to see how they changed with every different treasure you got. One of my favorite childhood games desu
>>
>>335860214
It is though. All it does is impede progress, and then there's the shitty world map instead of branching routes. Apparently that's okay when WL does it.
>>
>>335861308

> what is a puzzle game

WL3 actually forces you to think to figure out how to get all the treasure

Also, it punishes you by forcing you to restart segments if you fuck up
>>
>>335866020
i liked the backtracking in wario land 3
however i played it before 2, maybe people who played it afterward were pissed
>>
>>335865885
It's still great that Wario Land fucking exists because the Mario Land team didn't feel comfortable making a game with someone else's characters.
>>
>>335860214
The power down sucks, but the backtracking is what really ruined it for me. I love well interconnected, explorable sidescrollers but WL3 really isn't. You can't explore shit because you need to collect a specific sequence of treasures that you can't even use. Not even in a simple overworld menu like SMB3. Treasures didn't do much in WL1 or 2 but at least they weren't mandatory and didn't fuck up the progression by kicking you out of the level, taking away every other colored key in your possession so you have to backtrack even more. I swear, there's enough of those fuckers to make DooM blush.

Which is weird because they designed the hell outta WLII. That game is amazing. Whenever it might get dull suddenly you gotta stop a train or unplug a faucet or go on a huge detour into a haunted mansion or Atlantis or something and get a different ending. WL3 just didn't have that variety. Those atmospheric forest and void levels could have been gripping if I didn't know exactly what four dull fetch quests I'd be doing there: the same ones as every other level.
>>
>>335866383
Those Pussies ended up making the right choice though. I am all about Wario land II, and 4...
>>
>>335865840

>tfw there will never be a mario game as good as super mario world
>>
>>335866572

I actually enjoyed it for taking a metroidvania feel and putting it into small bite-sized levels. Because with larger, interconnected levels, it's great to play for a couple hours, but when you put it down and come back, suddenly you forget where everything is.

Wario Land 3 is the only game I know that's maanged to be a bite-sized metroidvania
>>
>>335862163
Wario Land 2 is the only game where you lose money for getting hit, but it doesn't tally your total coins at the end towards a better ending. You just have to collect all the treasure and map pieces from each level.
