Instead of thinking about what made the previous game good they focused on making sure the player dies as much as possible. I'm 100% sure DaS wasn't supposed to get sequels so soon but they were forced to anyways.
>>

Adaptability, son. Shit is vital.

It wasn't supposed to have a sequel. Miyazaki has stated himself that he doesn't like doing sequels and it shows. I dunno, Dark Souls has its flaws, but there is still something about it that the other games don't reach, it has so much heart in it I guess.

>>335850165
It was my first Souls game, but Bloodborne is my favorite. I'm talking about the Dark Souls series specifically, I played DeS after DaS and while I didn't think it was better I still think it's better than the sequels.
>>
>>335849778
I feel like Dark Souls is the best in the series for everything but combat, which Dark Souls III wins in. Level design did go to shit towards the end though, something that didn't happen in 3. I think I prefer 3 overall, but the way the world progresses along with the player'should actions and just in general is better in both the first game and demons souls.
>>
>>335851232
Yeah, playing the game for the first time without the wiki is really punishing.
In my first playthrough, after gargoyles, when that dude at Firelink Shrine told me to go down, I thought he meant the Catacombs as it was the obvious "down" location, so I actually cleared them all the way to Nito before even touching Lower Undead Burg or other locations.

It was painful, to say the least.

Not the guy you're replying to, but I did the same. I went down the catacombs first and pinwheel was my first proper boss. I didn't notice the ladder in the boss room and homeward bone'd out. I didn't find those steps to the berg for ages, I feel like an idiot.
>>
>>335851559
Dark Souls has better combat imo, Dark Souls 3 is too easy and I honestly think the lack of fat rolling is dumb. Being able to fast roll in full knight armor right out of the gate was a bit of a letdown for me as well as the fact that the knight's starting weapon was retardedly OP. Longsword can carry you through Dark Souls as well obviously, but it never gets to the point of being absurdly OP, also I feel like there is more viability in Dark Souls, many weapons are good and there are pros and cons to all of them whereas 3 from what I can tell so far has weapons that are objectively the best and all the rest are solely if you think they're cool. The lack of poise is ultimately the downfall of the sequels imo.

>>335851747
What didn't you like about Bloodborne? Please don't turn this into a consolewar shitfest anybody I'm honestly just curious.
>>
>>335850197
No the picture is not from my game, i just googled for a screen shot for reference, but I do like the Halbred? Whats wrong with the Halbred?
>>
>>335851963
I honestly don't know why Bloodborne is loved so much. I appreciate the uniqueness of the weapons, the cool level and enemy designs, and the boss fights, especially those with multiple stages. But overall I felt that the combat was far too easy. Getting health back with hits and having 20 quick to use healing items made the game too easy... not to mention it was super short, online was shitty and all the armor was lame as fuck. It was a good game, and I've yet to beat the DLC, but it doesn't hold a candle to the real souls games imo. It failed to replicate the magic of DaS and was one up'd in every way by DaS3. Each to their own, but I don't understand it.
>>
>>335851968
It feels like DS is actually meant to be played with the wiki. It also nearly turns into a RPG that way, as otherwise it's a "go to random locations and kill some guys" game, as there is nearly no exposure of lore and story in the game outside of item descriptions. After returning to the game after few weeks break, I often found myself not remembering what is even going on, and why am I going to the next location.
>>
>>335852485
>Getting health back with hits and having 20 quick to use healing items made the game too easy

That's exactly it. Let me preface by saying it's got nothing to do with casual vs hardcore. It has everything to do with keeping the player IN the game, and engaged in its fast combat. The combat of Souls/Bloodborne is not very complicated, but VERY satisfying. Bloodborne maximizes the time you get to be IN combat. Couple that with amazing art direction, atmosphere, etc. and people like it more than Souls.
>>
>>335848071
There are so many things in this game that are impossible to figure out without help, which is what makes it great/completely frustrating all at the same time, like "hit wall with my sword to reveal secret spider sister room?" never would have thought to do that
>>
>>335852485
Yeah the combat was easy, but it's easy in every game. Honestly, I died 20+ times using the NPC summon on Darkbeast Paarl.

Granted, I was underleveled, but I never had anything that rough in DaS or DaS3
>>
>>335847289
It's not like it's one of the best weapons in the game or anything, and IS the best in terms of it's effectiveness vs. how easy it is to get.

That's what the message system is for. And after awhile you can kinda intuit where they put the false walls just based on level design.

I see what you're saying about DaS and it's advantages over the third game, and I'm honestly on the fence. I don't feel too strongly about putting DaS3 over the first one, but right now having just beat it, I think in a lot of aspects it improves on the first one, if not entirely. I used the Claymore for the majority of my Dark Souls playthroughs and after finding it again in the third game, with it having a nearly identical move set, it just felt like I was playing a kickass expansion of the first game and that's honestly all I want from a sequel. It was fantastic, especially the boss fights, they certainly beat the ones in DaS.
>>
>>335852485
The combat is easier in BB because it's much more fluid imo, when you get into it you are an unstoppable killing machine and even though the combat is easier I still managed to die more times in it than in Dark Souls 3. Granted 3 was using combat I had already familiarized myself with, but it also feels much easier than Dark Souls mainly due to the lack of poise and the shortswords being retardedly overpowered.

Like you said though to each their own, at least you're cool about it unlike the majority of /v/.

Dude after an entire day of trying to find my way out of Blightown with both my Zweihander and Halbred almost completely broken i was heart broken to find out the bonfire wasn't lit at Firelink FUCK
>>
>>335853242
See, I enjoyed the Claymore as well in Dark Souls and opted to use it in 3 around the time I got to Wolnir. Up until that point, however, I had been using the Lothric Knight Sword and the only difference I noticed was that Claymore was slower. Due to no poise, the Claymore wasn't giving me much of a benefit because I could just stunlockshit to death with my straight sword already so it was kind of a letdown for me even though it has its same awesome moveset. I dunno, it could've also been because I had my annoying friend watching me and being like "dude why u gimping yourself just use straightsword lol" the whole time. The bosses were great and while I do think the majority was tougher than in Dark Souls there was still something lacking, I think it was the presentation. Gaping Dragon for instance is easy as fuck, but his presentation and design is just so awesome that I love him anyway and I didn't feel that as much for any bosses in 3. The only one that really struck me was Lothric, which is now one of my favorite boss fights in the whole series and maybe my favorite "dual" bossfight solely because of the lore and that incredible cutscene.

I think part of it may be me having overhyped the game a bit as well since after playing The Old Hunters in December I was under the assumption that Dark Souls 3 would be on that level the whole time, which is ridiculous to assume considering TOH is one concise expnsion as opposed to Dark Souls 3 being a much bigger thing.
>>
>defeat O&S
>see that Ornstein's armor is cool as fuck
>wonder if its available for the player
>yes, but only from the merchant that appears mid game at an empty secluded early game location that no player would ever visit again
Seriously? There is no excuse, it's just an extremly poor game desing. There is no way you could figure it out without checking out the Internet.

When I was playing Morrowind, during NPC dialogues, I often felt like I am reading wikipedia entries to get to know about the lore and what is going on. When playing Dark Souls, I actually have to read wikipedia entries to know what is going on.

Despite excellent gameplay, the game feels extremely poor in that department.
>>
>>335854032
Souls stories are pretty damn straight forward though, outside of background fluff. "The fire is fading and it's making shit fucked, also there is this stuff called dark, and it also is making shit fucked."

rewarding for backtracking EVERY SINGLE LOCATION you have ever visited for no reason? for what purpose? nearly nothing changes

Also, how are you supposed to figure out DLC location? I looted the Broken Pendant, but nothing in its description indicated that I am supposed to go back to Hydra location to enter the portal. I only learned about this from some twitch speedrun after I beat the game, because I don't get how you are supposed to figure it out yourself ingame.

Are you serious? Getting boss armor is easy as fuck, did you even try to figure it out or did you just immediately go to the internet for it? Maybe if you had some patience and put some time into the game you would realize that a lot of things aren't as obscure as you're making them out to be, although I will agree that accessing the DLC is extremely vague.

lolwut. DaS 3 is way harder than 1. In 1 you could just backstab everything to obvlivion.

>>335858004
Level up and if you're still having trouble just slap on Havels and heal through their hits.
>>
>>335852182
Level design
DaS: Everything till getting the lordvessel, plus Duke's Archives were fantastic. Everything else not so much. Areas were small but heavily interconnected with other areas

DaS3: Consistently good level design through all areas. Though doesn't necessarily reach the heights of some of DaS1's areas. It doesn't reach the lows either. Areas were huge and interconnected within themselves but not necessarily connected to eachother in various ways

Combat

DaS: Slower, but allows tanking to at least be viable. Non-boss enemies are trivialized by ease of backstabs.

DaS3: Combat is considerably faster and enemies tend to hit harder. But the downside to this is that tanking enemies often isn't viable due to some having insane combos.

Upgrades:

DaS: armor upgrading is useless, no infusion for melee builds.

DaS3: Armor upgrading removed because it was useless, mutiple forms of infusion for different builds. Luck can even be useful now with hollow infusion.

Enemies

DaS: enemies were cake once you knew how to actually play. The only mildly threatening enemies didn't respawn.

DaS3: fuckhard enemies goddamn everywhere later in game. Holy shit why the fuck do gargoyles respawn? The only ones that don't respawn are the raperider knights. Fucking giant enemy crabs

Bosses:

DaS: had all really good bosses outside of pinwheel, bed of chaos, and maybe Seath. Could be relentless but always had decent openings for healing

DaS3: had all really good bosses outside of Wolnir, and Yhorm depending on whether or not sieg died to yhorm. Greatwood was also kinda dumb. Some bosses are TOO aggressive and don't give you any opportunity to heal.

Story:

Obviously DaS1 has the better story.

Bonfires:

DaS: Bonfired space decently apart

DaS3: Good placement for the most part but some were just too close together.

Music:

DaS: Pretty Good

DaS3: kind of bland

Bloodborne: Obviously best in the series.
