While it's pretty commonly believed almost all theropods had feathers there's nothing to suggest larger ones (like T.rex) were covered in them.

Mostly likely they had some on their head, spine, tail and/or arms, usually the smaller the dino the more likely they had feathers.

And other dinos like Sauropods probably didn't have any feathers at all.

Are birds lame now? Do you think hawks and eagles are lame? What about the cassowary, a giant, colorful terrestrial bird that can and will happily tear your guts open if you let your guard down around it? Feathers are rad, eat shit.

It goes beyond feathers. Why did paleontologists assume that the skin was just stretched directly over their bones? That they would literally just look like their skeletons? Most living things don't.

>>
>>335839546
We don't know for sure but we can make educated guesses, first we can look at their skeletons and compare them to current living animals, like reptiles or birds. We have also found many skin imprints that show signs of scaly skin, but we also have many fossils with signs of feathers, both rock imprints and feather sockets in bones.

Color is usually just whatever the artist feels like. And at the end of the day they probably looked very different from our current image of them
>>
>>335838841
What has begun
>>
>>335839546
No one knows what they looked like. Even professionals are mostly just taking wild guesses by combining their skeletons with existing animals. Most dinosaur depictions are just "lizard skin wrapped around whatever bones we can find" and people just roll with it because they assume these people are using some advanced methods to determine this.

Reality is we don't know squat and likely never will.

>>
>>335839546
>Serious question, how do we know what dinosaurs looked like on the outside? Why are they almost always portrayed with green skin?
We don't really. They're guesses based on the environment they would have lived in at the time. If a dinosaur lived in an are that was covered in forests or jungles, it's not a bad guess to say that they probably had those kinds of colours for camouflage.
>Maybe they were wooly like mammoths.
We DO know that a lot of them had feathers now. Some discoveries in a region of china, where volcanic ash caused the fossils in the area to be much better preserved, show dinosaurs with feathers from MUCH earlier than we previously thought. Since the 90s we've also learned a lot more about the things we need to look for in fossils.

Smaller theropods had feathers, bigger ones didn't (we have different body part prints from tyranosaur scales and they didn't have feathers, which has a lot of sense, otherwise they would have died of suffocation), also this are a really small branch of all the dinosaur species, most of them didn't have feathers.

Try to get your science from places beyond io9, please.

Nothing, all dinos except theropods went extinct at the end of the cretaceous, with some lines of theropods eventually becoming modern day birds (Although the evolutionary process started before the cretaceous even began)

Mammals during the mezosoic were mostly smaller shrews/rat like or smaller dog like predators

Utahraptors are considerably bigger. Three times as big, so no.

Nah, T rex just has a lot of debate over it, and feathers is a big one. Almost all skin impressions of T rex have scales, except for one from china (who never ever lie about scientific discoveries. Nope. The Chinese are 1000% trustworthy), but featherfags shun all the other skin impressions and only hold up the Chinese impressions as truth and gospel.

Negative, Utahraptors are much larger. that's a deinonychus.

Issue is, Utah's and deinonychus get confused, because they're damn similar.

They had the same skin/feathers as each other, whereas the smaller velociraptor had winged arms, and more fur.

(more fur on smaller bodies, to keep them warm.)

ps: trex had practically no feathers or fur, as it was so big.

remember kids, the bigger the dinosaur, the less feathers it had.

KT extinction made life pretty much impossible for any megafauna so only small dinosaurs survived and many of the survivors were small feathered theropods some of which such as archeopteryx were already somewhat adapted to flight as a means of locomotion which in a world that was scarce on food was a serious advantage to have.
The ice ages may also have played a role in making a warm blooded feathered form successful.
