Why do most games have lives? Why are lives still a thing? If losing all your lives only puts you farther than where you would normally spawn there's no need. It just wastes time.

like >>335833972 said. It's a simple risk-reward system. It gives players some incentive to not fuck up, and when there are long stretches in the game where losing your lives would push you super far back, things can get really tense.
