Why do lava and fire not look nearly as terrifying in video games as they do in real life?
>>
because devs treat it like insta-death instead of a force that will fuck you up horribly within the couple of seconds that you have left to live if you fall inside
>>
I'm scared to play the webm. Someone explain it to me instead
>>
>>335827463
It's just someone throwing a tank of some liquid into some lava.
>>
>>335827351
This. It'd be a lot more terrifying if your character burned alive, screaming in absolute agony and writhing, trying to grab for anything to help in the pain and save his/her life.

>>
>>335827761
OP here. I was just wondering why lava in games never looks as threatening as the real bubbling lava in the webm
>>
>>335827121
Because everyone thinks lava is a liquid like water and not a non-newtonian liquid like it is in real life.

And falling into real lava would be extremely fucking horrifying due to the way it works, it would be like stepping into a pool of cornstarch (Just look into youtube experiments where they fill a pool with cornstarch/custard and attempt to run over it.) and it would slowly engulf you as you get set on fire and burn to death "slowly" as you sink into it.

Well slow compared to what one might expect, I think it's easy not to think about it and imagine that if you fall in lava you would be near instantly gone, because the average person doesn't realize just how much energy is involved in burning a body, or all the problems of putting something that's basically a giant sack of water into all of that.

>What you’re seeing is the wasted body of 35 year old Hiroshi Ouchi, who had suffered a terrible accident at the uranium reprocessing facility in Tokaimura, northeast of Tokyo where he had worked, on 30 September 1999. The cause of the accident was the depositing of a uranyl nitrate solution, which contained roughly 16.6kg of uranium, into a precipitation tank, exceeding its critical mass. Three workers were exposed to incredible amounts of the most powerful type of radiation in the form of neutron beams.

>The micro-second those beams shot through his body, Ouchi was a dead man. The radiation completely destroyed the chromosomes in his body.

>According to a book written by NHK-TV called A Slow Death: 83 Days of Radiation Sickness, when arriving at the University of Tokyo Hospital Emergency Room, Mr Ouchi appeared relatively well for someone that had just been subjected to mind blowing levels of radiation, and was even able to converse with doctors.

>That is, until his skin started falling off.

>As the radiation in his body began to break down the chromosomes within his cells, Ouchi’s condition worsened. And then some.

>Ouchi was kept alive over a period of 3 months as his skin blackened and blistered and began to sluice off his body. His internal organs failed and he lost a jaw-dropping 20 litres of bodily fluids a day.

There is literally no worse way to die than radiation poisoning.

Yes, not instantly but depending on time exposed you will die within weeks. I believe 5 seconds is the minimum guarantee that you will die of it eventually, within weeks.

1 or 2 seconds is not instant death.

He's talking about how it's just a void zone where the game ends if you enter it, he was complaining at the lack of pain.

Also it's quite thick, you don't just sink into it. You essentially melt and calcify over a 3 or 4 second period. You would normally die from heat by being next to it, or anywhere above it.

After suffering patiently for a week, Ouchi suddenly cracked. "I can't take it any more. ... I am not guinea pig". (p.52) His words shocked the physicians and nurses in charge of his treatment. Was this the time to shift the focus from cure to palliative care? Even if a case could be made for persevering a bit longer, what purpose could possibly have been served by resuscitating him on the 59th day, after his heart stopped three times for a total of 49 minutes? (p.92-95) This was a man whose chromosomes had been destroyed. "[N]one of Ouchi's chromosomes could be identified or arranged in order."(p.38) Ouchi's body was destroyed from the inside out. (p.122) It was a slow, painful and presumably unpreventable death. Surely the doctors should have been able to recognize very early that he could not be saved.

and also
The white blood cell count of both patients was zero. Their skin began to slough off of their bodies. No amount of painkillers could give relief to these men who hold the world record for the longest survival rate of anyone afflicted with acute radiation poisoning.

and then

Both patients soon lost their ability to speak, and were asked to communicate in writing with doctors. As their physical deterioration began to accelerate, so did their mental state. On the verge of death, one of the final statements written by Masato Shinohara: "Mommy, please"

finally,

Ouchi's intestines began to melt, so doctors put a camera in his rectum to monitor their condition. His muscular tissue broke down to the point where it began to slide off of his bones. He died 82 days after exposure of multiple organ failure in a condition that can be described as "skeletonized".

The mantle is hot enough to produce liquid rock but it is largely solid.

Because the pressure is so great that it forces the material to be solid even though it just wants to flow.

On 21 May 1946, with seven colleagues watching, Slotin performed an experiment that involved the creation of one of the first steps of a fission reaction by placing two half-spheres of beryllium (a neutron reflector) around a plutonium core. The experiment used the same 6.2-kilogram (13.7 lb) plutonium core that had irradiated Harry K. Daghlian, Jr., later called the "demon core" for its role in the two accidents. Slotin grasped the upper 9-inch beryllium hemisphere[14] with his left hand through a thumb hole at the top while he maintained the separation of the half-spheres using the blade of a screwdriver with his right hand, having removed the shims normally used. Using a screwdriver was not a normal part of the experimental protocol.[1]

At 3:20 p.m., the screwdriver slipped and the upper beryllium hemisphere fell, causing a "prompt critical" reaction and a burst of hard radiation.[9] At the time, the scientists in the room observed the blue glow of air ionization and felt a heat wave. In addition Slotin experienced a sour taste in his mouth and an intense burning sensation in his left hand. Slotin jerked his left hand upward, lifting the upper beryllium hemisphere and dropping it to the floor, ending the reaction. However, he had already been exposed to a lethal dose of neutron radiation.[1] At the time of the accident, dosimetry badges were in a locked box about 100 feet (30 m) from the accident. Realizing that no one in the room had their film badges on, "immediately after the accident Dr. Slotin asked to have the badges taken from the lead box and placed on the critical assembly".[14] This peculiar response was attributed to "vertigo" and was of no value for determining the actual doses received by the men in the room.[14]

Others in the room at the time included Raemer E. Schreiber, Alvin Cushman Graves, Stanley Allan Kline, Marion Edward Cieslicki, Dwight Smith Young, Theodore P. Perlman, and Pvt. Patrick J. Cleary.[17][18][19][20][21]

As soon as Slotin left the building, he vomited, a common reaction from exposure to extremely intense ionizing radiation. Slotin's colleagues rushed him to the hospital, but massive and irreversible damage had already been done.[1]

By 25 May 1946, four of the eight men exposed during the incident had been discharged from hospital. The Army doctor responsible for the hospital, Captain Paul Hageman, said of remaining patients Slotin, Graves, Kline and Young that "their immediate condition is satisfactory."[21]

Despite intensive medical care and offers from numerous volunteers to donate blood for possible transfusions, Slotin's condition rapidly deteriorated,[1] and Major-General Leslie R. Groves informed Slotin's parents of their son's inevitable death. Over the next nine days, Slotin suffered an "agonizing sequence of radiation-induced traumas", including severe diarrhea, reduced urine output, swollen hands, erythema, "massive blisters on his hands and forearms", intestinal paralysis, gangrene, and ultimately "a total disintegration of bodily functions".[22] Slotin died at 11 a.m. on May 30, in the presence of his parents.[23] He was buried in Shaarey Zedek Cemetery, Winnipeg, on 2 June 1946.[1][24]
