Off the top o me head, SMT dates back as far as around 1990. And I think the demon/monster collecting into party elements as well.

I played Red/Blue when I was in high school. That was all I ever took from Pokemon.
SMT and Persona though, gummy as it's gotten has always been much more appealing.
Not really. Persona is, now at least, a social sim with turn-based combat based around personas you constantly fuse, switch, and utilize for said social mechanics. Pokemon has no social elements and there is no fusing of pokemon nor do you constantly switch out your team every five seconds. In Persona keeping the same one for a while is tough even if you grind. Whereas with pokemon you can keep the same team going for pretty much the entire team, hell you can use your starter only if you want.
Outside of collecting beings to help you fight they have very little in common. Besides, SMT is older I believe. If anything Pokemon is a mature version of SMT.

It's not though. There are no special tools or gadgets that allow for exploration. The levels are linear and fit their boss' aesthetic and theme. Only DaS1 had the feel of castlevania with its exploration and even there it was kinda weak unless you had the master key.
