a weird thing is i always remember the pre-game area vividly and have strong feelings about it, even though it wasn't really part of the game. i was obsessed with games like Omikron and Urban Chaos because it gave you a huge 3d city to explore, and that starting area was like a little slice of that, before the rest of the game was all claustrophobic ship interiors. yes i loved the recreation deck.

One thing you should know about SS2 character system is that raising skills/stats up to 4 is relatively cheap, but levels 5 and 6 are much, much more expensive.
Another thing you should know: Standard weapons are OP, raising them to 6 is not a waste, raising every other weapon type is, though.

Stops being scary the moment you get a weapon skill up to speed, stops being about resource managements soon afterwards, the levels are linear mazes that you will backtrack through dozens of time while killing the same few respawning enemies over and over again, and the last few levels are an equivalent of Half-Life's Xen. It also has so many trap options for your character that you might call it an Anticipation of Arcanum. On subsequent replays I felt like the audio logs and Shodan taunting you were the only things keeping it together.
