You have to get close from the front. Right next to the guy basically.
You can parry based on weapon length (so you can parrry a halberd from a mile away), but for riposte you have to walk to them.

While that might be true I believe this is more a case where From was given mighty praise for the half assed games that were DeS and DaS1 so they learned they didn't need to put a lot of work into things light a cohesive (or even remotely clear) plot, a completely functional (and slightly balanced) combat system, or to really try and push the boundaries of doing something new with each game.
They know they could just shit out two more souls games and still make bank. So they did.

Just be glad you aren't an Australian, I'm sure it cost something like $140 kangaroo dollars. As long as you didn't expect it to revolutionize the series then I think buying it delivered a reasonable product. /v/ says 10/10 because it does enough to feed their nostalgia for the previous titles, and lots of fan service, while setting it in a shiny new version of the same setting, and given that it is new that means lots of people playing it for the multi-player aspect.
