Dual Strike flopped hard. IS responded by changing things up with DoR, and didn't bother releasing it in Japan due to how poorly DS sold. Despite selling decently, DoR didn't sell enough. With Battalion Wars 2 also selling poorly, Wars was retired.

Characters were insufferable and the plot was retarded. It's like they went out of their way to fit as many cheesy cliches in as they could. But the big difference compared to previous games was the tone. It's a lot easier to glance over and ignore the shitty story in the GBA games where the game doesn't even try to have a good story compared to DoR where IS tried to write something engaging and failed miserably. But again, it's not a big deal compared to the gameplay.
