But Dark Souls 2 did refine the core of Souls gameplay. It got shit on for its bad lore, okay music, and weird map placement (volcano on top of a windmill, etc.) Dark Souls 2 was basically the MGS2 of the Souls series. It actually refined the series core gameplay, but remains a black sheep for everything else it failed on.

I enjoyed 2 more than 3 because of its simple and direct gameplay, and the story had some pretty interestig themes.
3 wasted your time with things like camo and survival and its only real highlight is the bosses and Ocelot. The main plot itself is really forced tragedy.
All in all MGS4 couldve been good but it was too rushed as a game and its story suffered from trying to incorporate all the bullshit from 3/PO.

No, although I like MGS2 a lot and I think it's got a better and more interesting story than MGS3, I think MGS1 still has the overall best story because it's a simpler one relatively speaking, and has a tone that's just unmatched by the rest of the games.
And I really will disagree with you on the soundtrack, it's not bad, but those jazz undertones and general more upbeat sound bothered me, especially jumping from MGS1 to 2.

All of the Metal Gear games have a few memorable tracks, but MGS1 is the one that gets me the most across the board. It's got the most memorable tracks in terms of quality and quantity, and helps the game create a darker and more serious tone than the others.
And yeah, Liquid's motivations are the most 2 dimensional. Psycho Mantis follows behind him, but if you listen to more of the codecs and stuff you understand how he could get to that "I just want to kill as many as I could." hatred for humanity he's got because of his powers.
