I literally have no idea what happened to Anri in my first playthrogh and it bothers me to no end.
Okay, I met him and Horace once at Road of Sacrifices. Later I summoned him to fight one of the bosses with me, and that was it.
Never saw him again, and by the end game I found Horace in the lake area and he was hostile, so I had to kill him.
Then again, I didnt met Yulia, or whatever that woman with black armor is called, in that playthrough so my best guess is that she killed Anri at some point.

Two ways:
1. there's always a sign near it. Same for illusory walls. Players are expected to pass on knowledge and help each other.
2. when you approach the statue you're unable to get past an invisible boundary. This is incredibly rare in DS and only occurs around NPCs. It's the typical player reaction to attack anything that seems to be blocking them (see, for example, those living trees in DS1, illusory walls, etc.) so that's how some players would discover it. Then they leave messages for those who don't.

Illusory wall messages are literally the result of players hacking at every conceivably suspicious wall and leaving messages for the ones that happen to be illusory. Some of them are obscure as fuck. Either that or it's people who have the shitty guides.
