DDS2 has a lower encounter rate, set to much a more reasonable level.
There's a better sense of pacing in the story, with cutscenes happening mid-dungeon
There's a generally higher level of polish and new features.
The mantra system, while not without its flaws, is better than the one in the first game, and stomach ache rates were turned down so devouring is less annoying
The battle music is generally better, and the rest is just as good.
There are at least twice as many boss fights and they are almost all better than the ones in the first game.
It's the second half of the story, which means its the part where all the best stuff happens.
That's just off the top of my head. DDS1 is a good, unpolished game, and DDS2 is fantastic.
The only significant flaws in DDS2 by my reckoning are the possibility of having to grind for an hour if you picked the worst possible team, and the fact that a lot of the superbosses require grinding to unlock.
