How are they not? Gen 1 Pokemon are pretty much just generic animals with weird proportions. With Gen 2 onwards they started expanding out into designs that actually looked interesting. I'd take a detailed looking Ice Cream Cone and Chandelier over a 2-tone sphere with eyes.

But that's just cherry picking tho. Plenty of the Pokemon from recent gens in that pic have almost the same level of detail from Pokemon, they just don't have dull coloured skin/fur and look more vibrant. Some are even more detailed, like Purrloin compared to Persion just to name an example.

My mistake, meant Liepard. Referring to the image comparing the two. Liepard has actual tufts of fur, and a design attached to the fur itself as well. Persion is just some cream cat that looks like it was drawn by some shitty furfag artist that draws fur as weirdly-coloured shiny skin.

The 2nd/3rd stage evolutions legitimately look like autistic OC donut steels right down to the exaggerated yet vacant expressions . I assume whoever leaked it only had access to the 1st stages and then 'filled in the blanks.'
