>Is the Beat'em up Genre over?
Not exactly but its not over saturated either, like most games are. That is actually a good thing, may have a chance for some good games.
>>
>>335708560
Not really, though its not super common either. Traditional beat em ups have come out over the past few years. Dragon's Crown being one of the more notable.

The genre as a whole has mostly evolved into games like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta though.
>>
>>335710563
That's like asking "Why lawnmowers are considered different from scissors because they both cut, right?"

That said, "hack and slash" is the dumbest genre description ever. Just because you're not punching someone in the face doesn't make a game stop being a beat 'em up.
>>
>>335710806
>evolved
>bayonetta
Fuck off, Kamiya.
>>
>>335708560

It was over when Devil May Cry was released, that's what the modern beat 'em up is.

People who insist on calling those games "hack 'n' slash" can go fuck themselves. DMC, MGR:R, NG, Splatterhouse 2010, Golden Axe 2008, etc., etc. are all beat 'em ups.
>>
>>335710361

According to that anon, it probably is that in one genre you use swords to hack and slash stuff, and in the other you don't.

That anon is full of shit though.
>>
DFO is very much alive.
>>
>>335715139
Thats what I thought too. As far as my understanding goes, they're pretty much the same type of game just in one game you use weapons and the other you don't. Which is a kinda dumb distinction.
>>
>>335714468
Weapons really.
Dmc, Bayonetta, mgs risibg, ninja gaiden and gow are all hack n slashes.
Really we dont have many modern beat um ups anymore, but the definition is hand to hand melee combat.
A quick Google search would explain for you

>>
>>335718803
Im not the one who define genres but like music, a little difference is how its defined.

For me really the pace of a game is the real thing, while arkham are beat um up/puzzle games, ass Creed are hack n slash/stealth/parkor game, where the combat works very similar.

I always think gow or ninja gaiden combat speed is hack n slash.
Arkham combat speed is beat um up
>>
>>335718803

It's retarded because it's not true, that anon is an idiot.

Hack 'n' slash games are Gauntlet, Diablo, Sacred, etc.

Devil May Cry and the like ARE NOT HACK 'N' SLASH. Hack 'n' slash has never meant "Just a beat 'em up but with weapons" but for some reason there are still retards who insist it does.

Maybe, and that's a big maybe, you could argue musou games are close enough to the principles of hack 'n' slash that you could classify them as such but definitely not DMC style games, they are just beat 'em ups with some mechanics borrowed from platformers and fighting games.
>>
>>335719750
But steam says that DMC and Killer is Dead are Hack n Slash, so you are a liar anon, very very bad.
>>
>>335719994

Actually, they call them "hack and slash", not "hack 'n' slash". It's the term the retards invented rather than just admitting they didn't know what a hack 'n' slash was.
>>
Punch club.
>>
>>335719750
Devil May Cry and the like are hack n slash. Hack n slash games are fast paced combat focused with weapons.
Like dmc, God of war and ninja gaiden.

Just wiki these games ffs, they will be classed action/adventure/hack n slash games

Idk what the original gauntles was classed as but diablo is an isomectric action, rpg, hack n slash to my knowledge
Ive never played them, not my type of games.
Nor are hack n slashes tbqh

Double Dragon 30th Anniversary reboot when?
>>
>>335720336
Genres are and have changed over the generations, as I was a kid Street fighter was called a beat um up, it wasnt until fighting games defined their own genre that they were classified as fighting games over beat um ups.
Same with hack and slash games, over beat um ups, the latter being the more hand to hand weapon based 3D games of the last few generations.

Even disregarding using Wiki as a source of info, its not uncommon for games to be listed by improper genre. There have been many games classified as MMOs for instance that were nothing more than just four player online games like PSO for instance.

>>335722282
There is no harm in using wiki as a starting point of brief info. Especially on conversations like this.
Wiki is user based, assuming a lot of these popular games wiki pages are done by Dev or publishers pr and/or marketing team.
Also genres and classifications are informal really, just as with most artistic media. The classification and genres are created by critics and journalists.

For an example most people class hitman games as stealth/action games, where most hardcore hitman fans would class them as puzzle games.
They are both genres in realty, well a mix of both

lolno, too much handholding, story bullshit and focus on counter crap

Last games that I remember trying to implement a "modern" version of a beat em up are Spikeout and MK Shaolin Monks. Urban Reign and Spartan Total Warrior also deserve a mention. I don't think the combo autist Devil May Cry games or other single-player focused games like God of War or Splatterhouse really capture the essence of the genre either. Beat em ups were always designed around bro-op. Sengoku Basara is fucking awesome, but not quite like it either.
>>
>>335729026
Nope. There's no crowd control, there's no proper grabs, the positioning does not matter, enemies pose no threat other than being able to break your combo, it's all just really simple timing.
>>
What do you do once perfection is achieved?
>>
>>335729861
>Beat em ups were always designed around bro-op.
>can hit each other
>if there's no friendly damage then strategic positioning and varied movesets become mostly irrelevant
>no co-op moves in most games
>second player is often more dangerous than your enemies
>games become much more difficult

Co-op in these games always felt like an afterthought 2bh.
>>
So where do CURAZHY games play into this beat-em-up/hack-n'-slash debacle? Games like DMC, Kingdom Hearts, MGR, Wonderful 101?

They are beat em ups but a very different kind that focuses more on execution-heavy combos, expressive play and complicated boss fights rather than things like crowd control and positioning. They're great but in their own ways. God Hand is the only one that feels like an old school beat em up while still keeping some of that cuhrayzee appeal.

>>
>>335730254
The main appeal of them was playing them with your bro. I remember spending huge amounts of time with my younger brother playing Dynasty Warriors for the same reason. The fact that the games didn't/did have all that crap you mentioned is just because your mind is sullied by the modern idea that games need to be over-designed and have faggot shit like tag team moves to have a certain appeal. In this case co-op, which is always a bit competitive and not about teamwork.

To whom? I enjoyed playing Streets of Rage 2 with my friends as much as the next guy but it was a very shallow experience. I only truly started appreciating the genre when playing it alone and seeing all the depth it offers under that simplistic surface. It's like saying that arcade games were designed for credit feeding just because most people played them that way.

Stats and levels give players a sense of progression. Both in terms of allowing them to get more powerful without having to get any better at the game, and from the visible existence of the treadmill itself.
Devs use this as a cheap way of getting people into games.

They were a shallow, button-mashy, rehashed genre.

Yeah, you could memorize every enemy spawn player and become god at it, but what's the point? They don't even have any interesting scoring systems (like shmups) or fighting styles (like versus fighting games). People only remember them because they were fun time-wasters to play with buddies.

Do yourself a favor and play Guardian Heroes, it's faster and tougher with a whole bunch of story path branches. Code of Princess was suppose to it's successor but it unfortunately turned out to be a lite-version. Also the OST is ridiculous https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBTkqv6GsRk

most games after final fight try to make the combat more varied past pressing A multiple times.
knights of the round had a block mechanic that really changed how you should play.
later games had special moves or variable combos, different ways to attack, stuff like that.

I don't hate the art style, but it looks under-animated in their videos. Also if that grain effect is in the actual game that should go away.

All of these horrid effects people add to 2d games gives me cancer. You have people adding screen curvature, scan lines, chromatic aberration, film grain, and all kinds of other terrible shit.

Yeah it is a bit under-animated, I agree. I think the grain effect is used due to the Grindhouse reference. I don't mind it, but an option to turn it off would be good.

I want the woman who did art for DD2: The Revenge to come back.
She also did a manga about what I can surmise to be about a space caveman with a gigantic fucking axe. The name of it is GALO. Yes, seriously, and it came out years before that fucking video.

That's because nobody can get that shit right anymore.
I think the hardest thing to do with them is getting the balance between enemy/boss HP and player weapons just right. You don't want either the bosses or weapons to be too weak and you don't want shit to take too long either, or it becomes boring and predictable.
Pic related, what a great looking sack of shit, and a colossal pain in the ass to play through.
Even though, on a technical level, it has more gameplay to it than Metal Slug, it is insanely less refined, to the point where I think the entire team that worked on it, pretty much said "let's not fuck this up ever again" when working on the first MS.
In before some asshole says cuphead. No, that's pretty much just a shmup. Especially with the absolute dogshit weapon variety.

No, but like most genres, it's been forgotten by the industry and so you need to rely on smaller/indie developers to continue it. And like most genres, it's a fair bit different than back in the 90s.

Most people just aren't interested in buying a 30 minute game which anyone can sit down and complete without too much difficulty.

Not him but River City Ransom isn't a series. The two previous River City Ransom games were both localizations of Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari. The newest one coming out in Japan in a little over a month is Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari SP, another remake.
The one being localized is the Kunio-Kun game that came out about 3 years ago.
