Chess playing programs are actually way too simple for anything like that. Each piece has a numerical "weight" and the computer reads ahead trying to maintain the larger weight while reducing their opponent's as much as possible. It never "learns" unless the programmer reprograms it with more moves or refined weight values.
It's the Go-playing AI you have to worry about. They actually learn completely on their own just by playing the game. Nvidia also recently shoved thousands of paintings at a learning AI and now they can tell it to paint them a unique picture of a forest or a sunset at a beach and it'll just fucking do it. It didn't have to be programmed specifically for it, it just learned how to do it by being shown a bunch of paintings.
