The Surface hardware team is working on the next Xbox and they are prototyping the hardware according to a number of people with inside connections in MS like Paul Thurott. It's quite likely we will see the same secrecy since it's the same team.

Surface team was put in charge of all hardware including Xbox so they are doing it and it's been said a number of times by people close to MS that the next Xbox was being done by the Surface team and the next Xbox hardware was going to be overseen by Panos Panay because of the shake up and how the company is working now.

Surface Book was even part developed by the Xbox team so they were already co-conspiring never mind the smoke signals like the xbone dashboard changing again so that games will have a console designated stripe on the left side of each tile. I wouldn't be surprised if it's further along than we think and we see something at E3.

Well, if Remedy and Phill to be believed, porting Xbone games to UWP Windows 10 is easy, with the only change being Memory Management code, Combine it with Surface Book hot-swappable detachable GPU and rumours, or even claims by Phil, that next Xbox will be modular it might seem they were working on it all along.
But I'm still sceptical. And announcing something so big out of the blue might gurt them. People are hyped for PS Neo, but people hated Phil when he said he wants to make a modular Xbone. So even if they'
re doing it it might bite them in the ass. I still think it's just Xbone Slim and we won't hear about Xbox modular for a year or 3, partially because Phil said we won't.

I'm thinking that Surface Book was laying ground work. But then it seems like a stealth announcement it would go down easier now that Sony is pulling the same option and the xbox fanbase wouldn't really take it so hard as long as they can shove as much power as they want into it since the biggest complaint about the xbone is it's relative lack of power to the PS4.

Don't get me wrong. Both are cheap laptop APU's but the PS4 outmuscled it. Giving customers the choice of playing on a budget or with power could win them people back.
