Its really slow, but it can pack a devastating punch.
Pontiff's second phase got rekt in 10 seconds on NG with a +6 greataxe.
The L2 into R2 combo is pretty goddamn slow, but it catches a lot of people off guard. They don't expect the attack to be that delayed, or think they're being clever by getting a hit in during the buildup. Hyper armor takes care of them, and I've one hit KO"d more invaders that way than I should be allowed to.
In PVE you can expect to one / two hit KO most enemies. It also staggers enemies if you hit the ground before them, so you can do a succesful follow up strike anyways.
The downsides are that its slow, takes a lot of stamina and its very easy to deal with for above average invaders.

At this point I've got 45str and 40 dex so I'm using quality. Also in NG+ running around constantly embered with dried fingers activated while trying to get through the level normally.
I win 4 / 5 fights and pve isn't all that difficult in DS3, so if I do lose I can get my souls back quickly and easily.

Yeah the range is very short, but I'm able to deal with that. The greataxe is all about agressive gameplan. The moment an invader overstretches himself and then puts up a shield is a que to unleash hell. Once they're guard broken you can do a one hit kill most of the time.

Yes. They do insane damage, L1 attacks are very strong and the L2 weapon art is very good and closes distance. Most people get caught by it. Very good for PvP, Old Demon King was a nightmare for me without it.
It disadvantage is that it's quite a bit slower than a longsword. It's faster than an axe though. And it looks cool.
The beauty of it is that everyone online is a swordfag so no one is able to tell that I'm gonna bring the pain down on them with it's moveset. Fastest weapons are my achilles though.

That's a decent level, ODK comes down to knowing his moveset. I died probably 8 tiems to him my first time fighting him, but I've 1-2 cycled him on 3 chars since. he's intimidating until you realized Demons are completely neutered and useless in this game, the rolling absolutely nullifies them.
