Here's the thing. E3 is certainly losing relevance and it isn't the event it used to be. But it is still the biggest single event in the year for video games. The only companies that can successfully pull off the whole 'we'll do our own event, we don't need E3' thing are companies who are not only huge but have enough relevance to pull it off.
Nintendo is very quickly losing relevance in the eyes of mainstream consumers. They went all in on the casuals during the Wii's time and they've completely lost that market with essentially no possible way of getting it back. That leaves them trying to win back core video game fans. And they're gonna do that by showing literally one fucking game at E3? Nevermind this new piece of hardware everyone wants to know about, we're definitely not in development hell.

The game on Wii U is almost finished, but since it would hurt the massive NX bump the game would give as a launch title, they are pushing it back further so they can squeeze more graphical detail on the superior hardware, but knowing nintendo it won't be that much good locking, it will probably just run at higher resolution or better framerate, maybe up the draw distance a bit.

if you mean the gamepad, it's actually pretty good in most cases, being to play games casually laying down on the couch like a handheld, or watching netflix in bed. The only way the gamepad gets bad use is when shitty devs make shitty use of it.
What really stopped it from selling is Nintendo's age old mindset, not understanding their old die hard fanbase grew up and they didn't grow up with them, for this reason you see more people buying and playing virtual console games for their nostalgic release. They are pandering to be family friendly which is a demographic that just doesn't play as much or buy as much, also their reluctance for good third party support. I am a Nintendo fan of old and still am to an extent, but i don't see myself buying anymore of their products as the appeal is waning. If Nintendo want to keep existing their need to stop being totally hipster and just trying too hard to be creative and innovate just for the sake of being different, these quirky ideas is not really a sustainable long term plan.

Most likely the NX was supposed to be there, they've had to delay and withhold it for some reason.

Directs are great for giving fans updates on their favorite/upcoming titles throughout the year, but the E3 presentation is when all eyes (not just the fans who watch Nintendo Directs) are on them to put out something new. Especially here in the US market.
If they want to bring in new customers who might have skipped the Wii U, that is the place to announce it. I think they're making a HUGE mistake not showing it off now.

They flat out said that there will be no news about the NX (and therefore NX games) at the direct, and that we'd only be seeing the Wii U version of Zelda.
They also said that Zelda would be the only PLAYABLE game they have at E3.
This wording leaves room for there to be other games in their direct that simply arn't playable, however I would not expect any big new Wii U game announcements (like 3D World or Captain Toad) during the direct, because if they're 2015 games then they would most likely be playable on the showfloor.
