I'd prefer they keep it silly, it set the series apart from GTA and it's clones.

I don't know why people imply that a gang storyline would be a GTA clone. GTA hasn't had a gang-related story since San Andreas and that was almost 12 whole years ago.
The way I see it, GTA is a general crime game. True Crime/Sleeping Dogs is a crime game with a police theme and Saints Row is a crime game with a gang theme.
Honestly, I don't hate SR3 or SR4. I liked them, but I've always missed the days of the original and SR2.

I actually prefer SR1 over SR2.
But maybe that's because I played it first and put a ton of hours into it just messing around for years before SR2 came out. It remember liking the characters, gangs and storylines better even if it ended on an annoying cliffhanger.
Plus it was fresh. I vividly remember playing that game when it came out and thinking to myself "GTA Who?". I was a GTA fanboy and SR1 converted me. I didn't even care that there wasn't a GTA out for 360 yet. SR1 fulfilled me.

SR2 had the right amount of lolrandom in it versus seriousness and straight up fun gameplay.
SR3 was still fun, but the gameplay part of it felt too short and not really fleshed out enough compared to SR2. And there was way too much focus on memes and shit.
SR4 was genuinely fun but not a proper SR game. It was better as a sandbox super hero simulator.

It came out to capitalize on the popularity of San Andreas and ran with the idea while GTA explored new ideas. It was worse than a ripoff, it was a ripoff living in the past, and there was little to suggest that they could even DO anything truly original with the series.

Actually, body customization as a whole had a fuckton more options in SR:TT and I loved the body triangle as a concept, but it definitely needed some tweaking. If you made a chick, each extreme was pretty distinct, but if you were a dude, setting yourself to the skinniest option made you look ripped, setting yourself to the fattest option made you look ripped, and setting yourself to the highest muscle option made you look like you ate steroids for breakfast.
I think SR2 did a great job at very deftly walking the line between serious and absurd, which was far more satisfying to me than the slapstick approach of SR3 and SR4.
I don't think the "gangster" setting is necessary though.
I think the universe lends itself well to a future dystopian sandbox game where Ultor has taken over, and you bring back the Saints to fight them for control of the city.
Or even a Assassin's Creed satire type game, where you find out that the "Saints" are an ancient secret society that fights back against a global conspiracy for world domination throughout history.

That was my experience with 2. I only had a PC at the time but I was seriously jonesing for a GTA experience. Bought the THQ bundle because steam actually had good sales back then and I felt like I couldn't justify spending full price on a GTA knockoff. Game blew me away. Strangely I never had most of the problems people say they have with the port. A bit of frame lag at the highest speeds but never anything that prevented me from playing.
I was hyped as fuck for 3. It was the last game I ever preordered and the last game I paid full price for. I learned my lesson. You don't get on the hype train you get thrown under it.
