It's because the themes explored in p4 are more sophomoric in nature than p3, and p4 is has more pandering than p3. They're both excellent games, but it feels like a step in the wrong direction.
The tone is also inconsistent as fuck. Half the time it's wacky adventures, half the time it's "SOMEONE WAS MURDERED.", p3 may be more depressing and edgy, but at least it's consistent.

All the games emulate very well on PC. 3 and 4 are more popular, but the old ones are great too, just another style. Play the PSP versions for 1 and 2, the FES edition on PS2 for 3, and the Vita version for 4 if you have one (though the PS2 version is just fine as well)

I respectfully disagree, anon. I think the gameplay is way worse in IV (smirking, balance, ez tetra/maka, etc). The concept is cooler in IV, but the overall story I'd give to Nocturne, and to me, the designs aren't even close. I don't really know a lot of people who like SMT who prefer the designs in IV.

Guys, we just wanted to talk about our slice of life murder mystery supernatural thriller anime games.Nocturne and SMT4 are both great for different reasons.If you prefer the whole bleak atmosphere and 'rise to power' thing in Nocturne then of course you're going to prefer that, and if you prefer the sci-fi elements and interactions between the Samurai from above and the 'unclean ones' in Tokyo, then you're going to prefer 4. Personally, I prefer SMT4 but still love Nocturne.

Not that anon, but I had a ton of fun with P1. It plays a lot more like SMT 1 and 2, in the sense that it is a first person dungeon crawler.
The dungeons are pretty well designed and easy to navigate, the combat is fun (well, I like it anyway) and goes pretty fast on the psp version, and you have both guns and melee weapons in classic megaten fashion which I think is awesome.It has lots of content and the story and characters are also top tier. I like this game more than P4, honestly, even if it probably isn't for everyone.
P4 is better because it has Yukiko.
Not even Titsuru can compete.

P4 had arguably better characters than P3, which is an important thing for a character driven game, but for me P3 has the better developed narrative and that makes it better as far I'm concerned.
I felt Persona 4's story turned into a bit of a mess. I liked that they weren't trying to outdo Persona 3 with the stakes escalating into an end of the world deal, it was just about a supernatural murder mystery in a small town. Then suddenly it was a fate of the world deal.

Two reasons i prefer P3 over 4 greatly, one nothing goes wrong in P4 and two the characters feel like characters
Persona 3 may be dark and edgy yes but you feel the weight of it all. Characters that actually matter die off and they devolpe. The closest i ever felt like shit was going down in P4 is when nanako was kidnapped.
Then she dies and i finally though "oh shit things are getting real things finally went up a notch"
But LOL NOPE she's back to life for some reason and there was no point to getting angry of feeling any kind of emotion at all
Secondly all of the characters in P4 revolve around you they have no agency they are just waiting for you to do something. Where as in P3 everyone has their own agenda and life.
Remember Chidori's and Junpeis romance? That was one of the best parts of the game that shit wouldn't have happened in P4.
The characters of P3 devolpe on their own in their own time, sure you can help them but ultimatley it's them that come to that decision. Where as in P4 you need hold their hand if they want to take so much as a shit.
A game with Teddie should not be considered a good video game.
