Just grab a Spanish to English dictionary and learn basic words. Pencil, bathroom, car, etc.and because grammar and syntax is identical, you can spew out coherent sentences no problem

The good thing about kanji is that they compress information extremely well, so you can read ridiculously fast. Learning Kanji the way the OP has listed is beyond pointless. You need to learn all the readings and some example words of the kanji being used in context when you learn a new kanji. Just learning one of the possible english readings for a character is stupid. You'll be trying to read and think that 先生 means previous life and have no idea how to pronounce it.

Most kanji on themselves are also homonymous with other kanji. Granted some of these words are older and not seen that often. But you just have to consider that Japanese kana (which cover all the possible sounds of the language) are based on just 46 pre-made syllables (and few variations like gemination), which is a lot more limited than f.ex. English and being able to combine any consonant, at times more than one consonant with a vowel.
I am learning it, I did 2000 words of RTK and am about 700 words into Core2k now. It's disheartening how much I forget, but I've gone too far to stop. I will learn that shitty language eventually.
