They re-designed and changed a lot of the styles even in 2, and it became a lot darker and some of the humor seemed to change. One side of me does say that the "sexier" design is a logical re-adjustment, but I do think the whimsical, weirdness of the original game should be represented more. 1 is an amazing game, but it seems way too hard for most people to stand.

This is simply untrue. French art was always really "free" and inovative in its way. After WWII the influence was clearly american, but stuff like Hergé gave it a local visual really early. comic "mature" age in the 80's aslo impacted the scene, and so did Manga a little later. Ankama isn't all that France produce and isn't representative of it at all.
