I don't think that was the case, the post-trial scene strongly implies that Gundham killed in order to prevent anyone from starving. It wasn't just about his own survival, he surrenders once the murder is fully figured out. He was expecting to get caught. Probably specifically targeted Nekomaru because he was a robot and had basically already died anyways.

He never would have murdered Mahiru, he had no trouble laying up a murder plan but Peko took the kill in order to ensure his survival because she probably loved him, which breaks the whole tool ordeal but she thought she could hide it and fool Monokuma and Monomi, by actually trying to believe she was a tool.
The contradictions in Peko's logic and the contradiction in Fuyuhiko's murder plan all were on purpose.

I don't think she ever actually fooled herself. She legitimately believed she was a tool. If not, she was willing to gamble Fuyuhiko's life. I think the former is more believable than the latter. It's Peko's and Fuyuhiko's characterization that made the case so great to me. Mahiru's actions in the past and how she tries to excuse herself were also pretty nice to watch. It's one of the few cases where they feel like actual human beings.

He killed because that is what it meant to not give up on life. But that clearly means he too wants to live, and thus arranged the murder like he did - and he did try to wriggle himself out even after they were on his trail.
He's calm at the end because he knew this is what it entails when you kill, when you don't give up on life. You live or die trying, he died.

Fuyuhiko acted cold towards her (not as cold as she to him, but still) and was never honest about his feelings towards her. He may not have seen her as a tool, but he certainly didn't see her as what she really was to him - a dear friend (if not more). That's lying to yourself.

I think 2-3 is underrated but that case should've been over at that point anyway. At a certain point the evidence only pointed at Hajime or Mikan and Hajime has an alibi with the movie. Mikan had no semblance of a defense but "look how pathetic I am though." But even that's gone by the time you get to THAT CAMERA ANGLE
