That said the mechanics are quite different: Q3 is straightforward with the weapons with plenty of movement mastery, UT has deeper weapons mechanics and combos, which lead to some interesting bullshittery.

Impact hammer jumping is weak and useless, and you have to charge it up to even get a good jump out of it.
I don't remember a single match in UT where someone was winning because of the impact hammer.
I remember plenty of Q3 matches where I got my ass blasted from people rocket jumping around the map.

Additionally, rocket jumping is:
- Instant
- Far more predictable
- Able to kill an enemy close by as you're also jumping out of range from another enemy

UT has always felt slow compared to Q3. Even when there was a grapple hook weapon in the game, it was still no where near as fast-paced.

That being said, some of the vehicles in UT2004 are amazingly fun to play.

I'll admit UT99 is slow and plodding, but UT2004 has the dodge system to get you around quickly. Impact/shield jumping is still weak but you can dodge right up lots of slanted walls for a similar effect if you get good at timing side-dodges.

it was a movement option, you jump and dodge at the same time and you get the momentum of both without the penalty of using one after the other- this means you can make distances never thought of before

mix in shield gun and things get crazy as you can negate massive fall damage and instead take stock 25 dam or 20, i forgot.

QL has limited bunnyhopping, Q3 only has strafejumping. Warsow has full bunnyhopping and strafejumping and you can switch between them midjump. Warsow also has dodges so you can change direction while strafejumping with no movement speed loss, something that can't be done in any version of Quake (without rocketjumping I suppose.)

Warsow also has more unique respawning/timing on the megahealth, instead of 35s flat it respawns 20s after whoever picked it up drops to 100hp.

Not to mention different damage values on some weapons, the rocket launcher being a huge one. Warsow rockets do 25 whole less damage on direct hits. Rails do less damage in Warsow as well.

I honestly can't believe I'm sitting here spoonfeeding you the differences between Warsow and Quake. You genuinely don't know them! Yet you'll sit there and insult Warsow like you're some high authority on Arena FPS games! I've seen great arena maps, great gameplay, and great atmosphere among many arena games...but I haven't seen something tick all of the boxes in one single package yet.

the momentum system was changed for 2k4 because you lose the horizontal momentum of your dodge if you jump and vice versa if you jump its horizontal momentum is lost when you dodge

I think because it was trivializing some maps, not really sure i never paid much mind back then to what it did to the meta. Its just one of those things the OG's would insist I learned to do.

I played both Warsow and Quake Live and it's just my opinion that Warsow is better. I'm not looking down on QLplayers. Cooller, Rapha and the lot speak for themselves but Quake is also way older than Warsow.

While it seems unfair since these aren't UT99, I will admit yeah some of the newer ones do have some better mechanics than Q3.

I played a bit of UT2003, and a lot of UT2004, but they still felt slow. I think possibly the large scale maps might have been half the reason why though.

Haven't touched UT3 or UT4. Have watched others play them though. For some reason they remind me of Gears of War, and I can't stand that game.

I live in Seattle, anon. Before that I lived in Arizona, specifically Maricopa County.

Air piston actually isn't that bad. you can rev it up to knock fuckers off the map. I mean, it essentially does the same job in terms of RJing as a RL, but it's not anywhere near as good for actually doing damage. Air piston is basically the Q3 gauntlet with rocket jumping properties

They're going into Alpha in October. Anyhow I don't really see how this game is called Pre-Alpha right now since Alpha status is when you're code complete.
This shit is already code complete in pre-alpha.
The gameplay is pretty much perfect and any changes at this point can only be tweaks such as damage or speed values.
All the maps are also already there, just not all of them are textured, those that aren't used placeholder visuals that STILL look better than Reflex/Warsow/Q3 on r_picmip 9

This will sound pathetic and cringey, but I'm just so happy that UT4 is coming out. My eyes get watery thinking about all the fun I had with friends years ago playing ut99, 2004, and quake arena. Shooters are so bad now, it's just amazing to see a game that:

It's coming out of pre-alpha in October and will either go into Alpha or straight into Beta, but I doubt they will be able to texture all maps by October so I'm betting Alpha.

All the maps so far do that, Outpost is just the most fun one to look at because it goes SO FAR OUT that it extends past the actual skybox sphere. And that's nuts.

There's nothing there... but imagine a game running on UE4 where there ARE things there, things you can shoot at, talk to, interact with. Because that's not a skybox, that's actual, playable (were it not for the clip brushes) map area.

They don't need to make a 'technically efficient' game. UT has always been the flagship game to sell the Unreal engine, and what better way to show off its capabilities? There's that short animated video thing Epic made, but people can easily dismiss that as being pre-rendered (despite the file being available to download to play on your own PC)- make a really fucking big map in UT and people will noclip out and see for themselves.

780 Ti, it runs flawless for me at 60 FPS maxed out at 1440p on all maps including the fully textured ones.
I know it's not a weak card but Nvidia completely dropped driver optimization support for it so it's really a testament to how good UE4 is.

The last thing we need is a stigma against developers who use smoke and mirror techniques to cut down on performance use.

What happens then when they come up with bigger maps? People are going to expect them to have the same detailed distant landscapes but because the maps are bigger, maybe your current rig won't run it so good anymore so you have to upgrade. Then there's the next game with higher fidelity graphics but since there's an expectation for more wasteful distant landscapes you have to upgrade again.

Then there's also the issue of how much time and effort has to go into creating all those details that could have been used to make more maps instead.

Think long-term.

Even if you can tell it fucks up and isn't accurate, just having shit move on a surface like that is great. Much better than those accurate shaders that double the fucking draw calls of any scene.

Pic related, OpenMW engine for Morrowind, new water shader drops my framerate by 30%. They're going to optimise shit but they want to finish gettings all the other features done first.

Hubs are basically official collection of servers, as Hub has a few servers you can join.
They're official dedicated servers and they don't run any custom content.
Basically they're there so you can quickly get a game on official settings with no custom shit.
And then you've got (Custom) Servers tab where everything goes.

UE4 has a bunch of default materials and shit so you can just jack off onto a heighmap, paint some background stuff, then tell it to reflect like realistically using PBR and it'll look pretty damn good.

Other than that waterfall most of it is scribbling on a heighmap and setting waterlevel.

Or maybe it will play them just fine. On a modern game engine with a modern computer, stuff like big maps and distant landscapes are fucking cheap. Drawing millions of polygons and applying textures can be done in a tiny fraction of a second, this isn't the days of Voodoo2s flying off shelves just to see texture filtering in GLQuake. It's particles and physics that give the biggest draw in games now, and usually that's where optimization falls apart.

That map could be one mile wide or a hundred and any framerate hit would be so small as to be inconsequential.

My 780 Ti can't do it so no I haven't.
I can run most of the maps in 2880x1620p but some of them like Pistola drop below 60 so I prefer to run in 2560x1440 for silky smooth perfect 60 FPS.

On the proviso that they nailed the atmosphere and aesthetics of the original game, I'd love a new single player set on Na Pali.

The tech is there to do the more open world they originally planned, where essentially the canyons were more interconnected and so on. Bulk out some intervening villages and towns a bit and you could have something incredible.
