You can just look at the chain.

>>
>>335223652
Because it's the fifth game in the franchise, and everybody already knows to check.

They're just trying to catch in the rare occasion where you're desperate to grab a chest before you get ganked.

None of you retarded faggots are addressing the question. How does it make sense for mimics to outnumber legitimate treasure chests? You're all just spouting variations on "git gud" which I have already done.
>>
>>335223553
Why are you even hitting chests? They dropped the bullshit mimics of 2 so you can literally tell at a glance again whether a chest is a mimic or not. Too bad making 90% of the chests mimics ruins any sort of appeal of mimic spotting.

Do you really think they had the players wellbeing in mind for their last installment of the series? This is their "fuck you" swan song.

Expect the DLC to be the most supreme levels of bullshit you can imagine. I'm expecting every enemy to have teleport and 1hko 1 frame attacks. All boss loot will be dropped from chests. All of those chests will be a new super mimic that kills you and drains 10 SLs per death.

Miyazaki is tired of our shit
>>

I dont know if it was some kind of bug but for me the non biped mimics in Lothric didn't breathe. Gave me a weird moment of uncertainty because the chain was in the mimic position but the chest wasn't moving.

I think it would be more interesting to add better ways to hide mimics. Or even punish players for checking chests by hitting them but putting subtle signs the chest is a mimic.

Like if you hit it, the contents turn to rubbish, but maybe there is a blood trail leading to it.

Stuff like that. I believe From can be more creative than just all these basically pointless mimics.

>>
I don't know why they didn't do something new with the mimics this time around.

I didn't fight a single one of those fuckers. Hunter Charmed each and every one of them.

There should have been one that caught the charm/firebomb and threw it right back at you. There should have been a room with chests and regular enemies. The moment you aggro the enemies they hit the mimic(s) and they murder the hollows and make a b-line for you. Or the fucker picks the greatsword out of its own mouth and starts sheev-spinning at you.

>>335224045
Bosses were the absolute worst part of the game. I hated them. They were all super special princesses who did their super special princess attacks that you had no recourse against so you just roll for five minutes (its hyperbole you faggots) and watch them being super special princesses, then hit them the obligatory one or two times before they do their spinny flippy super special princess weeb shit for another ten minutes. I quit at Lorien. They aren't even hard bosses, just fucking tedious and boring and creatively bankrupt.
>>
>>335224173
Why not create a different enemy for that? Giant Crystal Lizards already serve that purpose, you could make another one if you wanted. It just seems like a missed opportunity that is made apparent by the frequency of mimics.
>>

I think you're missing my point. My point is historically mimics were interesting because they exist to trick you. They don't do that anymore. I think your desire for optional bosses could have been upheld while also keeping the COOL AND FUN aspects of the mimic.

But instead mimics were reduced, in my mind, to something less interesting.

>>
Dynamic Mimic system when?

>Mimic placement randomizes every time you rest at a bonfire
>Mimics can pull out whatever treasure they're carrying , then proceed to beat you to death with it
>>
>>335224116
They toned down the movement (if you use binocs you can usually see the upper half of the chest move up and down, a la breathing) it seems like.

The real tell is the chain. If the chain (its on the right side of the chest if you're facing it) is pointing towards the front (towards you) its a mimic. If its pointing towards the back of the chest (away from you) its a regular old chest.

They changed this in 2 so, as far as I could tell staring at a mimic for ten minutes, that you can't tell the difference. While it makes mimics a possible threat again since you can't easily spot mimics it doesn't change anything since there are no consequences to hitting chests once.

>>335224105
There are subtle signs to see if its a mimic. Only game there wasn't was in 2.
>>
>>335224472
I liked the game if anything for the pace.
DsIII gets frenetic too quickly and fights are not enjoyable because after a while it is pure muscle reflex. There was more guessing, especially since parrying worked 1 in 3 times, for many encounters and PVP.

Fuck the collective opinion.

like all the games thus far
>>
>Let's make mimics have the same nonsensical model as DS1 so that it's obvious which chest is a mimic
>>
Mimics only had a right to exist because of a surprise factor. I think they shouldn't be in this game at all because nobody will get surprised after DaS2. Or maybe one lategame mimic once you start treating chests as your comfort zone. The way they are implemented now is just ridiculous and completely misses the point.
>>
>>335224045
>bosses are easy as fuck
>common enemy mobs will push your shit in in a second

What the kind of wacky tobaccy was Miyazaki smoking?
>>
Are there not a million bloodstains and "THIS IS A FUCKING MIMIC" messages surrounding each Mimic like in the previous games?
>>
>>335224582
Yeah I know there are subtle signs. And I appreciate that. But there is no point if you can just hit it anyways.
>>
>>335224531
The first chest in the game is a mimic.
That's a trick.

There's a mimic which can anticipate but also turns into basilisk ambush.
That's a trick.

There's a mimic in the middle of a hall of those fucking Branding Jailer Witches that your health bar shrink up like your weewee in the cold.
That's a fucking challenge.

They're not willy nilly strewn about.
They're pretty much all thoughtfully placed.
>>
>>335224582
>as far as I could tell staring at a mimic for ten minutes, that you can't tell the difference

Are you serious? Mimics had locks.
>>
There aren't even that many mimics outside of the dungeon, i don't understand this meme.

Not to mention they were always trivial shit, just look at the chain or whack the chest. Mimics are a cool idea but were never well implemented in any Souls. Maybe if there was an additional layer of danger, like setting of a trap when bashing a chest and randomized locations/loot, it'd be a little interesting.
>>
>>335224405
He summed it up better than I ever could. Seriously though the bosses in 3 feel like some ironic self aware take on Souls bosses. Like after they 1 shot grab attack you or do their 13 hit combo they look at camera, shrug, and go 'LOL SOULS GAMES AMIRITE GUYS WE'RE SO HARD!!!!1'

The worst part is that if they'd toned that shit down and only had a few 'big guy in armour with spinny flips and 2 shots you no matter what and does side to side swing, overhead swing, grab, and gimmick swing' those would have been the highlight of the game. Pontiff and Abyss Watchers were great. But when every single boss after Pontiff, aside from maybe Aldritch, is the exact same thing it is just boring.
>>
>>335224623
What's nonsensical? I mean they should have done something new, but once you know the tell, all mimics are obvious. In DaSII, mimics have locks
>>
>>335224582
>There are subtle signs to see if its a mimic. Only game there wasn't was in 2.
Besides the lock
>>
what is silly is just how powerful they are as a normal enemy

something that hides and tries to trick people to go inside it should only need to if they can't really get a kill any other way

yet they are stronger on their feet than most enemies in the game

The issue is more of a "I've played all the previous games and know exactly what they do already" issue. A lot of the enemies in this game do things differently than previous games (rolling backwards can get you killed by a lot of enemies, holding shield gets you bashed, ect) however we don't see the mimics getting that new paint. It would even help to give the mimics variation in their tells:

>some mimics have the same chain as normal chests, but slightly different color/texture/engravings
>some mimics will just rush you on sight if you get close enough
>some mimics will attack you if you pull out binoculars
>as an added bonus, mimic types will change/randomize each NG.
>>
>>335225223

Yeah I thought about that as I was typing. However that isn't the part that matters, at least to me. I want the approach to the chest to be the real spoopy part. The anticipation is what matters to me, not the result.

Alright, there are a dozen mimics in the game. The list is here:
http://darksouls3.wiki.fextralife.com/Mimic

First one, sure. Its a trick, you can see it breathing.

>2. By itself in its own room

>3.
I suppose this one could be to punish players who get greedy and aggro the demon and the mimic. But you could do that with an ambush and I feel like it doesn't align with the point of the mimic

>4
By itself

>5
This one you could accidentally kite it into the patrol of the peasant hollows, but again, this misses the point of a mimic.

>6.
Basilisk ambush. Fair enough.

>7.
This one can be dangerous if you fight it while the jailers are in the room, but you could do that with a sleeping crystal lizard, too. Or anything else. It misses the point of a mimic.

>8
Mimic with a bunch of rats. Same as last

>9
This one I can appreciate because its a huge room of "Yo, if you want for treasure, fight for it, fucker." But it still misses the point of the mimic.

>10
Sorcerer nearby, still no point in it being a mimic

>11
No trick or ambush, just a mimic near enemies

>12
Mimic by itself

From could have made this more interesting. But it just isn't. There is no point in these enemies being mimics. They could be golden sleeping leprechauns. That is my point. They never trick you except MAYBE twice. I just feel like they could've been way cooler, but instead an opportunity was missed.
>>
>>335224528
Talisman opens them but you still cant loot. It does allow you a brief moment of a few seconds to wail on the mimic for extra damage as it yawns. And yeah you do nore damage in that window. After it gets up you are back to normal damage.
>>
>>335226042
You can loot them when they're asleep from a talisman in DS3. Try it again. You can.
>>
Dark Souls mimics are babby's first mimic.

D&D had fucking mimics the size of rooms, their mouths were doors.
>>
>>335224091
What even are mimics? How did they get there? I always assumed they were carried there as a security system. It's weird to think about one of those tall spooky fuckers trying to sneak into Anor Londo, hiding behind lambs and corners. Every time someone turns around he ducks his arms and legs inside and hopes they don't question the treasure chest. Eventually he finds the perfect spot and just waits.
How long can mimics survive without food anyway? I mean if none of the other chests were opened there must not be any other undead walking around feeding the mimics. Mysteries man.

A mimic has its chain extending towards the front, while a real chest has a curved chain facing the back.

A mimic will sometimes open a little bit revealing its teeth.

This has been the standard for all Souls games. If you're getting killed by mimics you have nothing but your retardation to blame.

Same shit happened with the "ambushes". There is one every five meters. I have never once been surprised by an ambush/trap in das3. So fucking condensed, in-you-face and samey it's pathetic.

Nobody gets eaten by mimics.
All of them have a "mimicry ahead" message in front of them, and like 95% of chests are mimics anyway.
>>
>>335223517
If I were to make a game, after the beginning areas, 99.9% of chests would be mimics (better chest quality means harder mimic. Don't fuck with the adamantite mimics). You'd be tearing up at the sight of a chest that didn't want to eat you.

In every souls game there is a drake bridge. In every souls game there is a mook hollow hiding in a room full of explosive barrels that throws a firebomb.
I want to see these two factors become mimics. Kill the drake? Mimic bridge. Maybe the drake breathes mimics. Maybe the drake is a mimic. All the barrels are little skittering barrel mimics. The hollow erupts into a mimic. Firebomb mimic?

In every souls game there is a Moonlight Greatsword

>Every boss after Pontiff, aside from maybe Aldrich
OK.
>Yhorm
Gimmick boss where you kill it with the Demon's Souls Storm Ruler.
>Dancer
This is a boss that actually fits your complaint, but it's not that hard if you fight it when it's supposed to be fought.
>The Twin Princes
A boss that is differently paced to most other bosses in the series. It doesn't do many elegant, elaborate combos, but it teleports around, and in the second phase you need to kill one of the brothers before he revives the other. They deal a lot of damage, but they aren't that hard. Some of the side-to-side swings can fly over your head and most delayed attacks can even be dodged by dodging twice based off of reaction.
>Ancient Wyvern
Dragon God's long lost cousin.
>King of the Storm/Nameless King
A regular dragon fight with a slight twist, and then a straightforward fight with the beefed up child of Artorias, King Allant and Ornstein. I guess this could fit your complaint. It is very hard, but I thought he was on-par with Artorias.
>Soul of Cinder
Yes, it's a 1v1 fight, but the first phase doesn't fit your complaint and can be ended quickly.
The second phase, however, is Gwyn. Basically, again, on-par with Artorias.
I really don't get your complaint. There's plenty of variety in the late-game bosses and they aren't overly hard.
>>
>>335226793
They are shapeshifters

Because conventional fantasy, rehashes, and pretending to be frustrating when a mimic bonfire would actually be frustrating for the babies so they can't do it

I'm confused. I'm at the start of Irithyl dungeon and I swear I've only seen two or three mimics.

Are there just a shit tonne later on or is this some kind of fuck you from From Software to people who pirated the game?
>>
>>335223832
It's the chest in the area that leads you to smouldering lake that has one of those fire demons in it.

It's great for early game item farming
>>
>>335227018
Irithyl dungeon has excessively many.
Other than that, memelords exaggerating.
>>
>>335225452
It's mildly terrifying when bosses also get stuck in their default pose.

I got summoned for High Lord Wolnir and he just kinda floated there in his bizarre skeleton pose, periodically sliding along the slope but never attacking.
>>
>>335227108
I must have gone on a really wacky progression because I've just entered the dungeon. I swear 8/10 chests I've opened have been mimics.
>>
>>335225997
>I suppose this one could be to punish players who get greedy and aggro the demon and the mimic

you can actually get the mimic to fight the demon, which is cool
>>
>>335226847
So the Pontiff Knights in Irithyll have this thing where they're really fast with high poise and they do these twirly combos that hit like a truck
They're hard to get away from because their attacks cover ground like nobody's business, and they have a special swipe that basically doubles their blade's range

They're totally infuriating

And Pontiff Sulyvahn is basically these enemies but taller, faster, with two swords and more attacks
And he summons a clone in the second phase

It's like
Pretty shitty
>>
>>335227018
it's not that there's a lot of mimics

it's that the mimic : normal chest ratio seems to be close to one or even greater than one

But, because mimics are so fucking strong, it forces us to still be on our toes even when we know its a mimic.
>>
>>335223927
the dark souls 2 mimics had verry prominent latches for the metal chests and a giant keyhole thing for the wooden chests

>>
>>335227378

Wow, I'll be damned.

I got it on my 4th mimic, then.
>>
>An alternative interaction once you know the chest is a Mimic is to use an Undead Hunter Charm on the Mimic. This will render the Mimic incapacitated and will allow you to loot the Mimic like you would a normal chest. After the effect expires, the Mimic goes back to its default, sleeping state with a big yawn.

If Andre showed up in Bloodborne, that'd be fanservice. If Oscar showed up in DaS, that'd be fanservice.
I only just realized both Andre and Oscare are of Astora.

But in Dark Souls, he's a part of that world. You expect these games to be wholly separate, like DaS1 and II seemed to be? It's the same world, y'know. That's why they're all called Dark Souls.

And if I'm right, that Lothric is literally Lordran, then of fucking course we're going to see things from DaS1. Naturally.

You don't even need to beat Pontiff if you soley just want to fuck with people.

You can be under level 30, have enough int, faith and atunement for a shit ton of pyromancy and some spells with that atunement ring. Then you just get the executioner greatsword, slap carthus flame weapon on it with the Extra stamina damage while guarding ring and the old witch's ring, some kunai knives, hunter charms and rope bombs and you're set.

Not really, I'd say. I played for 50 hours without worrying about muh cheevos. Just spent most of the early game time helping others out with some bosses and sporadic PvP in between. An extra 20 hours was put into getting any trophies I missed on my last playthrough. Perhaps I'm burnt out for playing so much in so little time, but even DaS and BB kept me hooked for far longer. For now, I'm just shelving it until I get the motivation to pick it up again.
