I picked this up on sale the other day and played through it. It was fun but also sad because it reminded me how terrible modern games are. There were a couple puzzles where I had to grab a piece of paper and jot some things down to work it out. It was very satisfying. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Original will always be my favorite out of pure nostalgia but the remake is hands down the best in the series. Second best being RE2. Developers should take REmake as a textbook example of how to properly remake a game.

I think it fits a lot better in the series and had some genuine scares. The iron maidens and regenerators scared the shit out of me but it's too linear and not really survival horror. More like action horror. I like better than 5

I actually agree that some chapters should be far less linear; i like the chapter after you play as Ashley, it allows some backtracking and almost feels like RE1, where you just bum around the mansion.
It still does just enough to not feel like a scripted corridor like 5/6 does, but return to 1/2/3 map style would be welcomed.

I'd go so far as getting rid of the chapter thing all together and I'd actually like to see a proper survival horror game made in the style of 4/5/6. I think it would be cool to give enemies different weak spots and shit. The boss fights in 4 are infinitely better than anything 1/2/3 could do with just having to aim your weapon in at them.
Resident evil 3.5 looks like it would have combined the movement from the originals with the aiming of 4. I'd love to see something along those lines
Having only played 4 and 0 I can safely say 4 is the best of the series because people have said 5 and 6 are shit and ive seen other people play revelations and code veronica.
4 is just such an amazing game by itself it just cant be topped the main game was amazing then the side game where i got to play Hunk and chain neck break was just pure awesome
