It's a survival horror game with item conservation, mandatory stealth, and proper save points and loss of progress upon death. It was hardcore enough that IGN and Gamespot gave it a 5.9 and 6, with the difficulty being the main criticisms.

There was a mod iirc that fixes that, it made the game much more fun. Hopefully a sequel will come out when the new movies come out. Was on of the best looking games last year and had amazing atmosphere.

The stealth is shallow as fuck once you realize the alien can't see over waist high objects and even then they give you the flamethrower super early in the game

it barely broke even. probably because it was all flash and no substance and played like a slasher movie except the slasher wore a rubber alien suit. the alien was always on too short of a leash and stalked only amanda and came out at all the same moments. it had utterly top notch sound, lightning, and presentation but that was it.

Outlast had no combat or real interactivity. It was Amnesia except the enemies don't leave the level because you hid in a closet for a few minutes.

Isolation is some hybrid of Outlast style gameplay and oldschool survival horror, with combat being a possibility, and save systems that punish failure.

They actually try to re-create H.R. Giger's designs and do a great job at it.

i loved everything up to the medical part, that was the height of the game and created wonderful tension unlike anything else. everything after was downhill. you can only do the same go forward, locked door, alien, distract, find dead body with key, alien, distract, go forward, wait for elevator to next level so many times before it becomes old hat. the flashback to the crew who found the nest was neat.

I don't think medical was the height of the game, and don't think the core gameplay became repetitive any more than any other game, but the first half was definitely better than the second half, and the game went on for far too long with poor pacing and story not helping things.

Man, you want to know what an actual gimmick is?

The gravity gun from Half-Life 2.

That was marketed as some world changing technology, and the game itself had signifacnt portions modeled around it and the physics. entire sections were made just to accomodate that one point, and even the end sequence of the game where your only weapon was a gravity gun that had been over charged. And it worked, it was fun and people loved it and it sold like hot cakes.

That's a gimmick in a game, basing your entire game on that single point.

Now, What exactly is so bad about trying to recreate the atmosphere and horror of the original setting, what is so bad about wanting to accurately showcase the original movie onscreen for an avid fan of the series? Do you hate fun and things that keep faithful to the source material, because that is what you are implying here. Keeping faithful to the source isn't a gimmick, keeping faithful is the sole purpose a developer should have when adapting.

Prometheus was shit.

It was polished, shiny shit, but it was shit.

Isolation was a far better homage to Alien than Prometheus could ever hope to be because it wasn't being washed away with CGI holograms everywhere. It was too clean and neat to replicate what Alien had.
