Happens all the time with Dynasty Warrior type games. It's typically the same games reskined so only the fans of the theme will really bother to buy it.
It's the same thing with the Mystery Dungeon series. Critics find it dull, but fans like the themes.

It's the whole problem with gaming reviews. People feel the urge to review games similarly or else they look like their score is wrong. It used to be that you just find a reviewer with similar taste as you, but now (late 90s on) they all feel the need to be similar and evaluate 'objective' measures like polygons, frames, and length instead of if a game is fun or not. You wouldn't ask someone that hates strategy games to review X-COM 2 or someone that refuses to use gyro controls to review Star Fox Zero. For some reason indie games get passes on shit like that, but not the AAA games because we're in a social climate of 'BIG CORPORATION BAD, INDIVIDUAL FLOWER POWER CREATIVITY GOOD!'
So people that don't like a genre review those games and rate them low. If it's a niche title then the game gets scored as shit across the board, because people are following the score trend. While Star Fox isn't exactly a small time brand, the genre of arcade shooter is all but dead. So much of the complaints against it are with the short play time. So much of the complaints against Hyrule Warriors are about the repetitive gameplay. People are justified to not like those things, but it doesn't mean the games are bad. It means that reviewer doesn't like that mechanic.
We've moved away from individual reviewers and into game reviews by people that want their individuality known for social media gains, but ultimately have to put out an opinion that whatever website they work for will stand behind. And those paychecks don't get signed by people that like video games, just ad revenue. Your review better be 'right' or you'll get canned. You aren't allowed to like games everyone else already decided are shit, you know just like on /v/.
