I dunno what this says about me but I really like having a female lead. They have to be sexy and badass thou, but that also applies to Male MCs.
Currently playing death by degrees and between great Fan Service and Nina being a kickass chick, I like it a lot.

Samus Aran is the best female MC of all time.
She's a semi-silent main character outside of Other M. Her personality is defined only as far as her past is. The rest is left to the player.
She's gorgeous and undeniably feminine with a level of ability and an aura of mental fortitude that's seemingly masculine. Despite this she isn't written like a man with tits. Her abilities and strength aren't handwaved away by the writers as 'oh, she's a real tough girl.' It's technology and a remarkable past that gives her the capacity to change things, not politics external to the game world.
Ask yourself if there's a female main character you respect more, on a personal level, in video games.

It's really fucking hilarious in the new TR games because they tried too hard to make them "realistic" but quickly turned Lara into a superhero. Seeing those grizzled rebel guys in Rise of the Tomb Raider begging a young woman in her early 20's to kill things for them is just as hilarious as watching heavily armed zealots in body armor get slaughtered by her when she's outnumbered a dozen to one.
