what's the point of giving a test if you allow cheating?
>>

Same reason textbooks are expensive. You have to buy them.

whats the point of doing anything if you're not naked, tied up, blinded, and drugged? why bother taking tests if you're just gonna cheat by not being as hardcore as i am and doing things the hard way for literally no reason?

It's just not how it's done. Calculators are completely pointless at that level. You may need do some numerical stuff or just some shit that's really hard to do analytically, but then you use a PC with Matlab, usually. Calculators are irrelevant. They're not allowed tools in examinations either.

Also, mathematicians use plenty of tools. They're called computers. They run software like Matlab (first mentioned here >>335068909).

But math isn't its tools. Most math that you need to learn as a math students (and others, like engineers) doesn't require any of these tools to be understood, and used to solve problems big and small. The problems aren't the math either. They're just another set of tools, really. Abstractions.
>>
>>335070172
>removing tedium
math is tedious, you can't have math and make it not tedious. at that point you're bypassing the math, which is cheating.

>>
>>335070759
>you can't have math and make it not tedious
But you can make it less tedious
>>
>>335070501

It's a very serious matter. Because most people tend to react like you're reacting now, to what I and that guy have said. You react this way because most people have absolutely no idea about what math actually is. They have no idea what we who study it at this (actually pretty basic) level actually do, when we say that we study math.

I'll say it again: no, you don't need a calculator when you study math at university. I don't even fucking know what it'd be good for, even in the entry level courses. Statistics isn't actually a math course either, any more than physics courses are, just FYI.
>>
>>335071373
i hope you realize no one believes your bullshit and no one will fall for your bait
>>
>>335070501

Not a joke. Tedious numerical results are for computers. For understanding, results should be reached purely analytically, not necessarily specifying any numbers at all, and that was how it worked at exams back when I was in uni. I don't see how a calculator would have been much help, really. More applied subjects employing mathematical tools of course used calculators.

why do you feel calculators are unnecessary? i cant believe im actually falling for this pathetic bullshit. but i will, so explain. why is someone "retarded" for using a calculator? lets go back to the car analogy. you frequently walk to the next town. you do it because you think it helps you better understand the lay of the land and your location. you see me drive by in a car, with gps, and you mutter "retard" under your breath. i COULD walk all the way there too. but i think the difference between us in this situation is that i dont like wasting time and being inefficient. especially if theres tools available that can provide me with the means to do the same job youre doing, quicker. and if you say

That wasnt me. I didnt read all that, sorry. Well obviously if using a calculator is of help in an exam, it should be allowed. >Even engineers (who calculate in exams) dont need to use them as the problems use easy numbers (obv. doesnt mean that the problems are easy).

Engineers will take a lot of pure mathematics courses at most universities, and it's very likely that they won't be using calculators there.

Calculations are just the "dirty work", after all the math is done, after all. Or it's measurement, and so on. But it's dirty anyway, and doesn't actually have anything to do with the math per se.

He got replaced.
By a figure with one hand on his chin contemplating that he'd like to fornicate with the corresponding subject

I also didnt invent the scenario you imbecile.
This guy >>335071373 clearly states "study math at university". And I replied to the reply to that post.
Which means that I didnt INVENT the fucking the scenario, if was fucking given you fucking knobhead.

Seeing as you are literally retarted, let me help you
>Guy A: You dont need calculators for real math at university
>Guy B: Bullshit
>Me: You really dont need calculators for real math blabla
>You: WOW!!! now you're shifting the goalposts to a different kind of math WOW!!!!!
>>
>>335072269
what ? didnt you have old exams or something like that ? did you literally not know how that exam would be structured?

If you're an engineer taking physics for engineering, and the prof wants to ask you some shit like "if your spring constant is 5, and your second spring constant is 8, and the two springs are connected and only one of them is fully dampened, what's the force exerted on a ball that rolled down an incline 2 meters high into the spring (or some shit, I don't remember this was a while ago) then you'd have to write your work down to show you know how to figure it out, but you're allowed to use a calculator because why waste time actually multiplying and dividing out the numbers you plugged into the equations?

Calculators are for plug-and-chug stuff.

And as for that other equation earlier in the thread (the "let's see you use a calculator on this!" one) you could use a calculator to test the equation under each of the conditions the question is asking about, and then use that information to confirm or deny the claim. Or you could write it out, but writing shit out sucks

I dont know how american colleges work (nor do I really care), but find people you can study for exams with. That shit should be universally true. Lone ranger have it really hard.

But then again, I can't say if you're forced into groups, or even encouraged at your colleges, all I can say is that 99.99% of all students want to study in a group, they're just too asperger to say "wassup lad, wanna study together?".

>word vomit

It's actually designed to be as simple and unambiguous as possible. And it is. I mean of course you don't understand it. It's a language unto itself, like math, and you haven't been educated in it.

>whatever bullshit you do

It's called math.
>>
>>335077153
>needing other people to study
lol
>>
>>335077153
>group study

The most effective way to study is in pairs, I've read. If you have a study buddy that takes it seriously, it's a godsend.

>finished two years at my county college

Will I be fucked /v/? I'm no good with math and I want to get into computer science.

Lad, dont get me wrong, but "my calculator said so" isnt really confirming/denying something. Yes, I know that you can use WolframAlpha to solve easy shit like that, but what's the point of studying than ? Why not just go on Wikipedia ?

Thing is, an exam in math shouldnt be testing your calculating skill, so in real universities they either allow you one when needed to calculate (like in your problem) or deny you one when not even needed. That was my whole point.

You're fucked.

I dont need them, I just like to have them, as they're a convenience.

>>335077460
I actually meant that. I meant group as in "group of people who kinda study the same shit you do, which you all have on whatsapp and can contact any time to study together".

I had the luck to go through university with my best friend. We are literally on the same wavelength, and I have never in my life studied better and more effectively than with him on university.

you don't need to be exceptional in math to do computer science
get fucked

Funnily enough a kid in my review class was showing me Pokemon Red on his Ti 84

The same kind of thinking is certainly needed.
>>
>>335073904
Is my Applied statistics class were allowed to use a cheat sheet on the mid/final exam. (I can use 2 on the final because it's cumulative.)
>>
>>335078172
it isn't considering my friend managed to ace it
>>
>>335078084

You do need to be good.
>>
>>335077650
Its not magic. You have to study harder and more and someday you will just "get" it. Also, it's not like they start with analysis for advanced post doctorate mathmaticians in CS. Not saying its easy in the beginning, but it is doable.
>>
>>335067234
you're free to buy the casio or hp branded graphing calcs for a third of the price

nogaems tho
>>
>>335070370
What? I got that one for like $125. It was only $10 more than the Ti-84 and about 3 times better.
>>
>>335078209
To be honest, the only exams I respect are the ones where I can use cheat sheet.

Its as if the prof is saying
>You gon get fucked so hard, not even a cheat sheet will help you.
